The purpose of this study was to test the effects of Upper Extremities Passive Exercise on Upper Extremities' Spasticity, Hand Edema and Depression of Chronic Stroke Elderly Patients. Method : The research was designed by a non-equivalent pretest-post test way. The subjects were total 30 elderly patients who were hospitalized for chronic stroke ─ 15 subjects were assigned to the experimental group while the other 15 subjects were assigned to the control group. The data were collected from February 4, 2014 to March 31, 2014. The subjects were assigned to do upper extremities passive exercise for 20 minutes per day, five days a week for 8 weeks (Total number of 40). The data were collected prior to treatment after 4 weeks treatment and after 8 weeks treatment. The tools of this study were manual spasticity test to measure upper extremities' spasticity, the jeweler's ring measurement for measuring hand edema and the Geriatric Depression Short Form Korea version(GDSF-K) tool for depression. Data were analyzed by percentage, mean and standard deviation. χ²-test, t-test, Fisher's exact, Mann-Whiney U-test and repeated measurement of ANOVA using SPSS 21. The results were as follows : The hypothesis 1 : the upper spasticity of the experimental group will be reduced compared to the control group, which was supported(Z=-2.521 p=.012). The hypothesis 2 : the hand edema of the experimental group will be reduced, which was rejected(t=-1.40, p=.174). The hypothesis 3 : the depression of the experimental group will be reduced compared to the control group, which was supported(F=5.564, p=.006). Conclusion : As such, the upper extremity passive exercise is effective on the upper extremities' spasticity and depression for chronic stroke elderly patients in long term care hospital. It is recommended to apply the upper extremities passive exercise for chronic stroke elderly patients. Also further study is needed to develop nursing interventions and apply them through consistent interest in depression. Keywords : chronic stroke, upper extremities' spasticity, hand edema, depression, upper extremities passive exercise
