    Abstract An onion transplanting system with a 4 bar link-cam type was manufactured and tested to investigate an optimum operation condition which the relative velocity between a hopper and soil was closed to zero. A theoretical penetration error which was analyzed by the locus of several types' onion transplanting system with the conditions of row spaces (120 mm, 130 mm, and 140 mm) was 4.21 mm at 130 mm of row spaces with the 4 bar link-cam type onion transplanting system. Therefore all analysis was based on the 4 bar link-cam type onion transplanting system. The planting success rate for T9 nursery soil was 83.3% at sandy soil with 130 mm of row space and 50 plants/min of planting speed and was 75% at clay soil with 130 mm of row space and 50 plants/min or 55 plants/min of planting speed. Regardless of soil types, the planting success rate for C2 nursery soil was 100% with 130 mm of row space and 50 plants/min, or 55 plants/min of planting speed. The planting success rate was decreased when the breakage rate of nursery soil was more than 50%. The average angle of plant tilt for sandy soil was 13.9° and it was 11.2° with 130 mm of row space and 50 plants/min of planting speed. The average angle of plant tilt for clay soil was 28.8° and it was 23° with 130 mm of row space and 50 plants/min of planting speed. The diameter of the planting hole was 38.2 mm at sandy soil with 130 mm of row space and 50 plants/min of planting speed and was 38.4 mm at clay soil with 130 mm of row space and 45 plants/min of planting speed. The average of maximum transplanting power was 95.5W at sandy soil and 124.2W at clay soil with 140 mm of row space and 60 plants/min of planting speed. The optimum operation condition was calculated based on the redesign of the distance of up-and-down stroke, crank, connecting rod, main link, cam structure, upper link, cam follow, upper link, under link and LM guide. Using the optimized 4 bar link-cam type of an onion transplanting system, the theoretical penetration error was 0 mm with 140 mm of row space and 50 plants/min of planting speed.
