    The necessity of STEAM education began to attract wide attention in modern Korean society. The goal of STEM education is to cultivate the human resources who are able to blend science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the field of science-technology. However, the human resources in the field of science-technology in future should prepare the sense of balance to have knowledge, imagination and human sensitivity in one body. In order to meet the demands of the times, Arts are contained in STEM education. As a result, STEAM education appeared. Because Arts are the source of imagination, creativity and artistic sensitivity, Arts were included in STEAM education. Particularly, Arts are able to be expanded to the field containing the humanities over the arts. Performance and media art(visual art) appeared in Art education, too. They are directing to the integration of the various field-music, dance, science and technology. Therefore, Modern society needs Art education. Through it, Middle school students are able to observe the various kinds of media in a creative viewpoint and grow the competence to understand the diversity of art genre. However, In spite of the alteration of the demand of the times and the concept of art education itself about art education and lesson in the present field of education, because the functional learning activities are still in progress in school, the most of students lose their confidence and take a negative and passive attitude toward art lesson practically. The students who lose the opportunity to get various art education and lose interest in art lesson are present at the lesson hopelessly and passively in reality. As the result of this art lesson, when learners grow up, they will not be able to understand the diversity of art genre and modern culture. In order to find the solution on this realistic problems in art education by educational viewpoint, I come to study performance lesson model using character mask. Because the lesson model will have a big influence on the expansion of the scope of their thinking as follows, this lesson model is expected to value the utility in schools. 1. The learners in this lesson will develop the alteration in thinking of arts and the ability of communication. The learners will select the fresh theme, integrate various media and the diverse area of arts and cultivate the ability to restructure them. By way of the experience to express feeling, thought, emotion etc. freely, the learners will develop the integrated viewpoint about arts. As a result, learners are expected to have interests in art lessons and take part in this lessons positively. 2. Performance is able to facilitate the learners' creativity, the flexible shift of idea, and the wide-ranging imagination. As performance is body activities to be expressed by action, a teacher need to change the lesson of art subject into teaching-learning method different from concentration completion subject lesson at present. Therefor, as learners are encouraged to have art lessons to link the space of inside and outside, learners are made to get the wide-ranging understanding and stimulate esthetic sensitivity so that they can utilize artistic component in real life. 3. Character and mask are familiar materials, and get to be good motive to make learners show their abundant imagination in performance lessons. Character is materials which learners are familiar with in general. Mask is used to show many kinds of facial expression like the face of persons. 4. Learners can plan the contents of expression self-directedly and develop the progress in expression. As learners fix the contents of performance and make them carry out its expression, learners get to experience the progress of re-creation self-directedly. In this progress, learners in performance lessons get to alter from passive appreciator to active. So, learners' esthetic sensitivity level up and take part in all culture activities spontaneously. In the result, they come to have the opportunity to enjoy abundant life. Performance lessons to use character mask have plentiful importance in education viewpoint. But performance lessons are not utilized plentifully, because teachers are lacking in the understanding about values and function of performance lessons. In this situation, this study suggest the teaching-learning method focusing learners as the first assignment. And performance art lessons will contribute to the cultivation of persons to possess balance sense in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. And society in future needs these persons. In conclusion, Students will come to have whole-person thought, contribute to the understanding and development of modern art culture through performance art lessons.
