Integrated Design Processes by OpenBIM for IPD Optimization

The main purpose of this dissertation is to find out how to promote the IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) in the A.E.C firms. OpenBIM is purposed to integrate the IPD processes for its promotion. IPD becomes the frontier technology of the architectural project delivery based on the informational model, but it has been merely used. According to the project survey in Figure1, it is found that only 10% of projects in all are to undertake the BIM (Building Information Model) solution, and only 1% of BIM projects have been applied the IPD. Although IPD is an adequate project delivery method for BIM projects, in a large amount of projects the IPD is still not been widely used. The problems impeding the IPD are sorted into 3 categories: 1) Mind limitations; 2) Implementation method problems; 3) BIM technology limitations. It is found that only small part of the IPD applied projects have used the openBIM method to promote the IPD. Therefore, in the dissertation, the openBIM concept has been used to resolve the problems in the IPD implementation. The problems have been resolved by suggesting the openBIM concept as follows: 1) In the early design phases of IPD, openBIM suggested to be used to help the designer make the design decision. 2) In many IPD activities, stakeholders can be integrated into the A.E.C meeting room by the openBIM created visualized representation of project. 3) For design describing, openBIM provides various open standards to additionally supply the IFC schema to describe the informational design data. 4) In the big data maintenance process, openBIM provides data quality control tools. All above openBIM methods have been figured out to promote IPD. The unique advantage of this study is R&P (Research and Practice), which have been operated together. In previous studies, the scholars mainly focused on the construction phase but merely in the design phase and the literature and technical research, but few scholars focused on in-pit project practices. So, this study tries to move into design phase of IPD (In the A.E.C firms) to research how to promote the IPD combing the practices to overcome this deficiency. The combining method of integrating both literature and reality is an optimized systemically method. It is necessary to investigate the problems which had impeded IPD project promotion. Research and investigation have been done in the dissertation. In the first chapter, the problems impeding IPD are found, which are listed out the problems resolved by the author. In the following chapters the author aims to explain how to use openBIM to resolve the specific problems based on literature research and project practices. In the last chapter, one conclusion has been drawn: openBIM is used to resolve the problems, which can optimize the IPD, and bring the economic revenue and workflows efficiency. OpenBIM is an open standard, a method combining collaboration to optimize the IPD. OpenBIM concept is “various approaches are used to benefit each 'unit' of the IPD processes”. The openBIM concept means resolving the problems in the IPD processes without limitation and boundary. It aims to promote the IPD to unify to be “One design”. In figure 2, benefits of openBIM solution and BIM solution in IPD projects are compared. Contribution of this dissertation is to explore how to use openBIM to resolve problems that have impeded IPD promotion by 3 categories. From the planning to operating, from the technology to management, application of openBIM can optimize the IPD and bring the economic revenue through most project processes.
