Abstract Relationships Between Metabolic Syndrome and Gallbladder Stone or Gallbladder Polyp in Health Screening By Lee, Jae Seong Graduate School of Public Health Changwon National University Changwon, Korea Background : The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between the metabolic syndrome and gallbladder stones or gallbladder polyps, and reveal the correlation with the metabolic syndrome risk factors which may affect the risk factors of gallbladder cancer such as gallbladder stones and gallbladder polyps. Materials and Methods : Among healthy men and women with the age of 20 or more who underwent the health examination in one examination center from January 1st, 2013 to December 31st, 2013, 10,367 adults who have not had the cholecystectomy and included the results of upper abdominal ultrasound examination and results of components of metabolic syndrome were selected as subjects. When subjects in a group of gallbladder stones and a control and subjects in a group of gallbladder polyps and a control group were characterized, independent sample t-test was used to compare continuous variables. Chi-square test was used to compare non-continuous variables. Odds ratio was calculated by performing the binary logistic regression analysis in order to investigate the correlations between components of the metabolic syndrome and gallbladder stones or gallbladder polyps. Results : It was found that the prevalence of gallbladder stones, gallbladder polyps and metabolic syndrome was 6.5 %, 9.7 % and 15.8 %, respectively. When the correlation between the presence of the metabolic syndrome and gallbladder stones or gallbladder polyps was analyzed after data were adjusted for gender and age, a group with the metabolic syndrome had 1.39 of the relative risk of gallbladder stones (95 % CI, 1.14 - 1.69) and 1.22 of the relative risk of gallbladder polyps (95% CI, 1.03-1.45), which showed higher relative risks of gallbladder stones and gallbladder polyps compared to those in a control group. It was found that the metabolic syndrome gave significantly positive effects to gallbladder stones and gallbladder polyps (p
