A Comparative Analysis on the Teaching Method for Rhythm of Emile Jaques‐Dalcroze and Carl Orff

For modern music instructors who have been led music education In 20th Century, the importance of rhythm has been empathized. Particularly, Emile JaquesDalcroze(1865-1950) and Carl Orff(1895-1982) who studied and suggested experience-oriented music instruction insisted that the basic of music education must be in rhythm education. Each instruction recommends teaching learners according to their development levels. Especially, it pressed the necessity of early age rhythm education. In terms of teaching methods, Dalcroze's eurhythmics was selected. Carl Orff considered rhythm as stronger factor than melody. He puts starting point of music education in rhythm education starting from language. In addition, he used physical action and instruction method to teach from simple rhythm to complicated one. He made learners acquire of rhythm naturally. Teaching methods of Dalcroze and Orff which insisted physical activities are important in music education contributed to foster musical sense development and creative ability through physical expression. Particularly, teaching methods of Dalcroze showed attitudes and minds that music instructors must have. Their theories of education are becoming critical data for personality development and all-round education. As a result of analysis centered in rhythm education among teaching methods of Dalcroze and Orff, the following results could be acquired. First, Dalcroze and Orff pressed that rhythm education must be acquired in childhood. They pressed the importance of early education. Both put the objectives of music education through early age education in developing balanced personalities of children. Second, rhythm factors of Dalcroze are classified into more factors than Orff's rhythm factors. Third, the method of rhythm education of Emile Jaques Dalcroze is 'eurhythmics'. It has premise that music is the most critical factor and all the sources of musical rhythm lie in human physical rhythm. In other words, rhythm education through respective unique acquisition has been empathized. On the other hand, Orff's rhythm education method is to develop the pattern of rhythm generated naturally form linguistic rhythm into percussion instrument performance through physical action and Ostinato. It is to learn from simple pattern of rhythm to complicated pattern of rhythm step by step. Fourth, based on the theories of rhythm education of Emile Jaques Dalcroze and Carl Orff, different practice programs have been applied to analyze and practice. The following was resulted. It turned out that Students who have learned rhythm education of Emile Jaques Dalcroze and Carl Orff improved their abilities to understand and feel rhythm better than other students.
