    A Study on a Multicultural Method for Reading Korean Classical Novels and a Plan to Apply It Kim, Kyunghoi Department of Korean Language and Literature, Graduate School Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Multiculture coexists with various cultures has a very widespread concept that implies a macroscopic view such as region, nation and race as well as a microscopic view such as gender and class. Before calling modern society multicultural society, a human being has not signified multiculture or multicultural society, but has lived forming multicultural society. To understand features of multiculture and to find a way realizing the true value of it, I defined the concept of the method for reading and stipulated the criterion and ways of the multicultural method for reading, for the sake of reviewing cultural aspects in Korean classical novels from a multicultural point of view. Being based on it, I unpacked 「Yussisamdaerok」, 「Jusaengjeon」, 「ChoiGoWonjeon」 and「Choicheokjeon」, and organized multicultural aspects. I also suggested a plan for teaching and learning to teach multiculture applying the multicultural method for reading of classical novels in educational fields. Above all it was necessary for understanding and unraveling multicultural situations in modern society, to seek for solution to grasp and resolve personal and social problems that self and other who were in the process of forming identities should surmount, reviewing cultural aspects in classical novels from a multicultural point of view. I defined the method for reading that meant ways perusing texts or books, as a capacity to understand properly a text in the context of cultures, to introspect things figuring out and to put result of introspecting into practice. I also stipulated the criterion of the multicultural method for reading as 'relationship between self and other', restricted scope of this study to immigration to make multiculture to be a controversial issue in modern society, and proposed 'the diversification of a view→stipulating the relationship between self and other→pursuing the social Integration' to ways of the multicultural method for reading. The contents of unpacking classical novels are as the following. In the first, an immigrant who became the other by a settler was defined by discriminatory eyes, suffered from conflict with the settler, and was not able to lead a happy life he/she wanted in the long run. In 「Yussisamdaerok」 Yangsunggongju who yearned for Sinocentrism was marginalized in household and society by otherization of Han Chinese. In 「ChoiGoWonjeon」 Choichiwon who showed heroism was discriminated by emperor and retainers of Tang. Otherization of them was based on perception to strengthen every environment in order to maintain hegemony of the time. If the perception continues until this society, other destroyed by self like Yangsunggongju will be repeated. Besides it will be meaningless for self experiencing other to seek subjectivation as emperor of Tang who did not valuate properly existence and capacity of Choichiwon. On the other hand in case that an immigrant became subjectivation by a settler, both self and other experienced qualitative changes of life. In 「Jusaengjeon」 in case that a narrator of the Joseon Dynasty and Jusaeng of the Ming Dynasty met in relationship between a settler and immigrant, the narrator listened to a story of Jusaeng and sympathized with him. Each other formed sincere relationship through a heartfelt conversation, being based on it the narrator consoled Jusaeng who became the other in the real world and made Jusaeng to appreciate himself, so realized existential standing for Jusaeng. In 「Choicheokjeon」 Choicheok couple overcame tragedies of war and led happy lives with surrounding people, on the coattails of warmhearted neighbors treated respectfully with humanity and helped the couple who suffered from the horrors of war. As the narrator and Jusaeng, Choicheok couple and people helped them showed, with respect of otherness, self and other treated each other politely and communicated well with each other, so got advanced. In the second, ways that self and other defined and treated each other decided human relationship formation and one's life. Communication and consultation had a strong influence on relationship formation between self and other. Because for the sake of paradigm conversion of self-centric society, both self and other ought to reform identities, confirm and resolve mutually desires through conversations, self and other should communicate well on understanding of the problem. As conflict between Yangsunggongju and Han Chinese in 「Yussisamdaerok」 and confrontation between Choichiwon and emperor of Tang in 「ChoiGoWonjeon」, owing to failure of forming dialogic relation and lack of sincere discourse, it was not easy to seek ways for a solution to cultural differences and the social integration. Therefore self and other based on mutual trust must communicate constantly, understand exactly social absurdities, discuss them democratically and persistingly, then actions of coexistence of self and other will guarantee subjectivation of both sides and creative results like 「Jusaengjeon」 and 「Choicheokjeon」. In the third, multiculture was worth when cultural products made in the process of communication between self and other contributed to lives of both sides as well as better lives of members of society. In 「Choicheokjeon」 to set up happiness of community contained Choicheok couple in ending part as results to overcome otherization, was not only romantic handling that the author who did not consider lives of the settlement in multicultural society made his own decision, but also could disturb to have an insight into gap between the ideal and the real, and make us neglect to prepare realistic solutions. However relationship between self and other denied egocentrism guaranteed communication with humanity and better lives of society they belonged to. This shows that self, other and society are in indivisible relation, and value of multiculture can be proved when changes of self and other are closely connected with a change of the real world. And then I designed multicultural education applying the multicultural method for reading of classical novels. I provided a goal of multicultural education. It was that learners could understand relationship of self and other, analyze multicultural aspects, and seek ways to solve social absurdities through communication. I expected that learners were able to improve communication abilities and problem-solving abilities and expand their cultural abilities, so modern society would be able to accomplish stability and development namely an object of the social integration. To achieve the aim and object, I stipulated core contents as understanding relationship between self and other, communication, resolution of problems and intention of the social integration. I suggested methods for teaching and learning in order to teach multiculture contained the core contents effectively with problem learning model as the following: in the first arousing the learner's interest applying materials connected with multiculture, in the second making the learner appreciate multicultural aspects as his/her problems, in the third grasping multicultural aspects in depth reading classical novels, in the fourth cultivating communication abilities and problem-solving abilities sharing what he/she understand with teacher and learners through discussion, role play and writing, in the fifth evaluating multicultural class in general, judging effects of it and preparing foundation for the next class.
