A Case Study on the Application of Cultural Archetype of Japanese Youkai: Focused on Animation and Manga Characters Park, Areum Department of Global Culture and Contents Graduate School Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Unlike the pre-modern values of rational, instrumental reason or uniformity formed by enlightened discourse; the 21st century is a new paradigm of 'cultural century' infused by sensitivity, creativity and diversity. Furthermore, cultural industry contributes by raising national brand value, and is the source of 'soft power.' Thus, has made it inevitable but to create and discover new cultural contents that base one's country's core cultural values. Therefore, researching cultural identity in Korean contents, overcoming the limits of the Korean Wave, and forming cultural identity as a community focal point is meaningful to discover and inherit culture. Originating from contemporary context, 'Cultural Archetype' signifies as a stereotyped and standardized traditional cultural phenomenon deriving from tangible and intangible traces that were accumulated from the consciousness and actions originating from a group's collective, psychological and physical actions of a group's intrinsic archetype. This study will examine the case studies of Japanese cultural contents, specifically Japanese Youkai cultural archetype, which have achieved results, and will further explore the considered elements and implications to achieve cultural, industrial value through incorporating cultural archetype with different cultural contents from various media sources. After reviewing the cultural archtype development and cultural-content characterization of the most representative Japanese Youkai's (the Tengu, Youko, and Kappa); the research led to show that ancient Japanese created “Youkai” based on their primal, religious nature and inevitable natural disasters. Their view of nature, culture and social aspects was reflected to the fables, folktales and literature, and these repetitive changes had later on characterized the Youkais. Based on the selected typical qualities, the Youkai characters reflected the characteristics of its according cultural contents genre, and the social, cultural trend to be recreated into a new appearance, personality and status. These case studies show that reinterpretation or taking new approaches of Youkai cultural archetype is a prerequisite essential requirement for culture-industrialized cultural contents that aim for mass appeal and entertainment. The effort of maximizing the consensus and enjoyment of the public is to create industrial value such as economical profit and to develop expressing the continuity of the creative process as a succession of cultures of Youkai cultural archetype. Thus, the essence of each era is to recognize that cultural archetype, which is a result of shared cultural circle, is constantly changing, and when using as a cultural content, it should be thoroughly re-interpreted to establish a new phase. Thus, the past and future connected present is also creating tradition; it is an important task to research the cultural archetype which is shared among many Koreans lives, to find the essence, and to furthermore actively induct the enjoyment of the public to create industrial, cultural value of cultural archetype.
