A Study on the Digital Aesthetic Implication of Visual Storytelling This thesis aims to present a novel paradigmatic approach to the storytelling which has been regarded as a primal theory in Korean cultural studies. Notwithstanding many efforts have been made to develop the theory, the storytelling discourse in the Korean academia is stagnated by the narrow and antique view point and methods. Indeed, the present powerful emergence of storytelling discourse is mainly debted to the digital media which has showed tremendous growth and development in terms of technology and market performance in just several decades, which means new approach which is capable of including the general media phenomena in the storytelling theory, is necessary. However, present theory focuses on the Korean traditional notion of storytelling based on the revised narratology established ten to fifteen years ago, which preassumed existence of digitality as a nature of storytelling. Towards a novel and effective approach to the storytelling theory, this article argues, treatment of the major factors consist of modern storytelling theoretically such as digitality, commodity, image, as external factors, not internal one, is required prior to the research. Since storytelling is a common concept which can be especially connected to the theory of literature, some novel term and concept is required to demonstrate the nature of storytelling which includes electronic media circumstances. Visual Storytelling is suggested, in this regard, as a proper term, for it explicitly reveals the major characteristics of modern storytelling such as visuality, digitality, and so on, and it helps to understand the causal effect of the interactions of such factors which brings about aestheticisation, visualisation, habitualisation of storytelling. To scrutinize the very nature of Visual Storytelling, theoretical back to basic style approach is made, that the studies on the relationship between word and image, story and image is provided. Basically, of course, the relationship is something more than mutual one, which can be described Wechselwirkung in Friedrich Hegel's term. The historical approach to the issue is also provided, which highlights Horace's ut pictura poesis notion and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's famous book on the issue of similarity and/or difference between word and image, Laokoon oder Über die Grenzen der Malerei und Poesie. In the modern era, in media related domain, the tension between two media can be observed in the debate between scholars of narratologist Seymour Chatman and the film studies scholar David Bordwell on the issue of, especially, the existence of implied author and recognition of communication model approach. To understand these phenomena deeper, in this article, digital aesthetical approach is provided, which established with the philosophical theories of the Cultural Studies, including Post Structuralists, De-constructivism, and Criticism theory of Frankfurt school such as Theodor Adorno, Jean Baudrillard, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Max Horkheimer, Jean-François Lyotard, Martin Heidegger, and so on. The approach reveals that, in the era of Pictorial Turn and digital, the struggle between two media is balanced in the Visual Storytelling. It is highly expected that novel representational digital methods will be provided, which enable us to understand the world and one another through Visual Storytelling.
