A Corpus-based Study on Vocabulary Selection and Analysis of Vocabulary Size for the Primary and Secondary School English Curriculum The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, texts written for secondary school English learners were analyzed to determine the vocabulary size of the Korean school curriculum. Second, this paper describes the development and evaluation of a new basic word list for elementary English Education. For the first purpose, 9 English textbooks, 11 previous English tests from the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), and 17 preparation books for the CSAT (EBS CSAT books) were downloaded from the Internet to make up three corpora, each consisting of 16,414, 79,285, and 842,335 tokens respectively. A collection of middle and high school English textbooks was combined to seek to address the research question of how many words a language learner may learn only from English textbooks through school days. A corpus of English tests for the CSAT and EBS CSAT books was used to determine the vocabulary size necessary to know 95% of the words in text. The vocabulary size might establish the criteria for the language curriculum. For the second purpose, a corpus of 17 million running words of texts written for children was developed to compile a new basic word list for the elementary school curriculum. The texts were written for over 12 were not included in the corpus not to place a burden on Korean language learners. After the collection, the corpus analysis program Range was used to sort the words in the children's corpus. The program records the frequency and range of words. Words were selected for a new basic list based on range, frequency and usefulness. Range was considered before frequency because a word count based mainly on frequency would have been biased by longer texts. By usefulness, it means the new word list was combined with a basic word list from the 2009 national curriculum as a new list seeks to find its way towards the next language curriculum. After the selection, two elementary English teachers reviewed the list to filter out seemingly unrelated words for elementary school students. The main findings were as follows: First, the results indicate that learners need to be equipped with the most frequent 5,000 word families plus proper nouns and marginal words to reach 95% coverage of CSAT tests. When the figure is adjusted, this result is in sync with Nation(2006b), who came to the conclusion that a 8,000-9,000 word-family vocabulary is needed for dealing with written text to cover 98% of a given text. However, the school curriculum fails to present learners with 5,000 word families. According to the finding, combined English textbooks contained only 4,202 word families. All the 4,202 word families are not likely to be fully acquired by language learners, considering that learners are not able to acquire every word they encounter. Second, a new basic word list was compiled for language beginners. As a new list is based on a corpus-based study, there are more to use from this study for school curriculum developers. HCC 14 developed for this study can be used to select basic words for language beginners in further studies. Though this paper presents only 1,037 words for the school curriculum, in theory, HCC 14 allows users to generate up to 14,000 words.
