Implications and Challenges of Sino-Africa Relations: The Case of Zimbabwe China Relations The research focuses on China and Africa relations in tobacco trade. The research highlights the implications and challenges of Chinese FDI in Africa. In this case Zimbabwe. The aim was to find out if Chinese intervention in Zimbabwe tobacco farming has had a positive impact in the Zimbabwean tobacco industry. Focus is on tobacco farming because tobacco is Zimbabwe's largest cash crop and since the land reform in 2000 production has declined due to the unavailability of inputs and resources on the part of the newly placed farmers. The research clearly outlines the Zimbabwean look east policy which is realist in approach as it emphasizes on state sovereignty and seeks to run away from western hegemony and dominance and embrace the East who believe in non interference. Due to economic Liberalization China has opened up its market and expanded towards Africa I search of resources like oil. The research highlights the need for Zimbabwean tobacco in blending with Chinese tobacco to come up with a favorable brand of cigarettes highly expensive in China. The research has concluded that the intervention of China in Zimbabwe has positively affected the production and farming of tobacco through inputs provision, implements, employment creation and cash loans. The export of tobacco has increased and the new farmers have benefited on some skills expertise. This type of farming or contract also has its challenges which include poor contract negotiations, side marketing and etc. The study recommends that Zimbabwe should work on contracts that improve and advance processing of tobacco into cigarettes in Zimbabwe. Technological advancement is key to development thwarting all forms of dependency that are crippling all African countries due to globalization.
