New Regionalism and the Transformation into Security Community: The Sub-Regional Security Cooperation of ECOWAS Regionalism in Africa is a significant phenomenon in this post-Cold War era. After the bipolarity of the Soviet Union and the United States collapsed, the nation-state is now facing to the new challenge to survive in the global society. This research tries to understand regionalism from understanding constructivism. Constructivism put an importance on the social structure of the world society which decides the actors' behavior and identities as well. The three main elements, shared knowledge, material resources, and practices, are consist of the idea of constructivism. Particularly 'New Regionalism', which emphasizes on the invisible interaction among the various global actors rather than the trade and economic interaction among the official government, can be understood from the perspective of constructivism. New regionalism has enlarged into the multi-dimensional and comprehensive concept with the concern of security cooperation. From the case study of ECOWAS sub-regional cooperation in West Africa, we may know that the ECOWAS is also one of the sub-regional organizations influenced by the constructivism and new regionalism. It has developed security architecture to deal with its regional security issues. ECOWAS is currently transforming into security community in the aspect of institution, norm and common identity. The examples of Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire conflict show that the sub-regional security cooperation of ECOWAS has evolved. This study may contribute to the theoretical research on the ECOWAS and its security cooperation.
