This study has conducted a meta-analysis to verify the effects of self-esteem and depression programs targeting the local elderly. This study is meaningful in that it has used meta-analysis to comprehensively and systematically analyzed the study result of the effects of self-esteem and depression programs for the local elderly in the past 22 years. As for the research problem, it has analyzed the overall magnitude of effect of single and complex programs, and the magnitude of effect by type of program and by elements of program management. This study aims to suggest an objective and systematic guideline for the design of self-esteem and depression program taking account of the elderly's unique attributes. Among academic journals and doctoral theses published from 1990 to 2012, 50 theses that satisfied the conditions of before-after examination design of experiment group and contrasting group were selected to fulfill the analytical condition of meta-analysis. The result of analysis showed that the single program to enhance self-esteem had the largest magnitude of effect under the condition of health-enhancing program, combined gender, over 20 sessions in total, over 3 times per week, less than 10 people in a group, and more than 90 minutes of activity. As for the depression program, it showed the largest magnitude of effect under the condition of arts therapy program, less than 10 session in total for female group, 2 times per week, less than 10 people in a group, and less than 60 minutes of activity. And the complex program had the largest magnitude of effect under the condition of arts therapy program, combined gender, less than 10 sessions in total, 3 times per week, less than 10 people in a group, and less than 60 minutes of activity. Followings are the proposal of this study. First, because self-esteem and depression are in a close inverse correlation, it is more efficient and effective to carry out the complex program that enhances self-esteem and reduces depression simultaneously rather than leaning towards one side. Second, because the largest magnitude of effect was shown in arts therapy for depression reducing program and complex program and in health enhancing program for self-esteem enhancing program of senior citizen, health enhancing program and arts therapy should be developed and expanded in various kinds according to the attributes of the elderly. Third, as the institutionalized elderly is expected to increase, various programs and studies should be continued to improve self-esteem and depression corresponding to their desire. Fourth, further development and studies on programs for the male elderly are urgent as no preceding studies were conducted targeting only the male elderly. Fifth, based on this study that has conducted integrated analysis of self-esteem and depression program, the most important influence factor in elders suicide, elders suicide prevention program should be developed and along with the improvement of the program's quality, policy support is needed for maintenance and dispersion.
