ABSTRACT Comparison of Silver Nanoparticles and Silver Nanowires in Aquatic Toxicity - Department of Nano Fusion Technology, The Graduate School Hoseo University Asan, Korea (Supervised by Professor IL-JE YU) To better understand the potential ecotoxicological impact of releasing silver nanoparticles (under AgNP) and silver nanowires (under AgNW) into freshwater environments, the toxicities of these nanomaterials were assessed and compared using standard Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guidelines, including a “Daphnia species, Acute Immobilisation Test”, “Fish, Acute Toxicity Test”, and “Freshwater Alga and Cyanobacteria, Growth Inhibition Test”. According to the estimated median lethal/effective concentrations of AgNP and AgNW, the order of test organisms susceptibility was daphnia > algae > fish. Thus, according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), the AgNP and AgNW tested in this study should both be classified as “category acute 1” for D. magna and “category acute 2” for O. latipes and Raphidocelis subcapitata. In conclusion, the present results suggest that more attention should be paid to preventing the accidental or intentional release of silver nanomaterials into freshwater aquatic environments.
