    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliable cartilage landmarks of the lateral tibial plateau on predetermined method of MRI to reproduce these locations and correlate theses measurements with the lateral meniscal size. My hypothesis was that the author's method for MRI cartilage measurements would correlate well with the lateral meniscal size. Methods: The knee joints of 150 patients (age 21-49 years, 80 males, 70 females) were enrolled in this study. The height, weight, gender and body mass index (BMI) for each subject were recorded. Using the mid-sagittal image of lateral tibia plateau, the whole length spanning from the most anterior tothe most posterior margin of each meniscus were also measured. For the cartilage length measurement, the most anterior and posterior aspect of cartilage-bone blending points were marked. The perpendicular line from the lateral tibial plateau was drawn. Then, the parallel anteroposterior distance was measured. The MRI meniscal measurements were made by two physicians. Results: All measurements of subjects were in normal distribution. The power of this study was calculated to be 1.0. All values showed good reliability (ICC value range 0.994-0.998). The following correlation equation was obtained: cartilage versus lateral meniscal length: Y=0.456 X + 18.065, R2=0.389 (p=0.000). However, the accuracy for the formula(predict the meniscal dimensions within 10%) was 61%. Conclusion: The lateral meniscal length can be predicted from the cartilage length of ipsilateral knee using 3.0T MRI with the suggested method.
