    Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass by acid hydrolysis generates growth inhibitors such as furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and acetic acid. Our objective was to develop an amino acid producer Corynebacterium glutamicum strain capable of tolerating such inhibitors by systems metabolic engineering. Transcriptome analysis revealed the furfural stimulon in C. glutamicum, showing that those genetic responses are related to oxidative stress and SOS responses affecting energy metabolism. The genes that are related to furfural stress were selected as targets for overexpression. Consequently, the overexpression of FucO-like reductase and efflux-like permease enhanced the growth of C. glutamicum under 6.5 mM furfural stress by 1.2-fold and 1.54-fold, respectively, compared to the control.
