A risk management system applicable to TBM tunnel during design and construction stage

    The purpose of this study is to develop risk management system applicable to TBM tunnels. Risk factors which may occur in TBM tunnels were analyzed and a fault tree chart (FT chart) was prepared. In the FT chart, the causes of potential risks which may occur in TBM tunnels and the respective result were analysed. First of all, geological factors that need risk management were identified. It was found that a risk management system is needed when the TBM is running through fault zone and/or weak zone in case of the open TBM; when the TBM is confronted with mixed ground in case of the shield TBM. A risk management system consists of a risk register, a risk treatment register, and a risk action register. Risk factors are firstly classified into several categories during TBM design and construction, then the potential results that may occur for each risk are noted in the risk register, and lastly risk treatment plan and/or action plan (measure plan) are suggested for each of the scenarios. The second part of this thesis is the assessment of TBM machine data that can be obtained during tunnel excavation. The variations of machine data according to the changes in ground condition were studied through single and mixed parameter analysis. It was found that when the ground is changed from hard rock to soft rock, the ratio of the thrust force to the cutter torque increases. The relationship between the ratio of the thrust force to the cutter torque and the penetration rate shows that the ratio has a certain range of values for hard rock; on the other hand, it increases for soft rock. It means that we can recognize a sign of appearance of weak zone by assessing the ratio of the thrust force to the cutter torque according to each penetration rate. Multiple regression analysis of the machine data showed that the cutter torque increases with the increases of the total thrust force, and it decreases with the increase of the uniaxial compressive strength of the ground. Lastly, the multi-attribute decision making(MADM) theory is adopted in this thesis to be used for choosing the best action plan (measure plan) to reduce the potential ricks by taking into account the construction cost, the reliability, and the adaptability.
