Analytic comparison of trapezius and serratus anterior activities depending on shoulder complex movement

    The purpose of this study is to explore the best position of protraction for serratus anterior with minimal activity of upper trapezius. Fifteen young male students were recruited. All subjects performed maximal protraction action on horizontal abduction (0 degree, 30 degree, 60 degree, 90 degree) in 5 seconds. The muscles activities of four muscles, upper trapezius, middle trapezius, lower trapezius and serratus anterior, were recorded during the exercise by sEMG. All measurement and progress were performed equally. Data obtained in study were analyzed using Window SPSS/PC 18.0 program. Average(M) and standard(SD) of each variables calculated and compared. For changes of serratus anterior and trapezius, repeated measurement of ANOVA and Paired t-test to compare angle were carried out with a statistical significance level of α= .05. The upper trapezius showed greater mean electric activation amplitude on 0 degree of horizontal abduction. The middle trapezius showed greater mean electric activation amplitude on 90 degree of horizontal abduction. The lower trapezius showed greater mean electric activation amplitude on 90 degree of horizontal abduction. The serratus anterior showed greater mean electric activation amplitude on 0 degree of horizontal abduction. Even though 0 degree of horizontal abduction ranked highest electric amplitude to serratus anteiror, 30 degree and 60 degree of horizontal abduction were showed higher activation serratus anterior than 90 degree of horizontal abduction without highest activation upper trapezius. It would be an appropriate position to patients suffering shoulder pain and trapezius pain. The best position to improve lower trapezius was 90 degree of horizontal abduction. In general, it is the best position on 0 degree of horizontal abduction for serratus anterior to people who do not have upper trapezius pain during exercise. The best protraction exercise position to improve serratus anterior and minimal upper trapezius activation were 30 degree and 60 degree of horizontal abduction.
