    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dual tasking on the postural control during standing in patients with cerebellar ataxia (CA). It was hypothesized that the CA patients would exhibit different sway characteristics of the center of mass (COM) by complexity of the secondary cognitive task compared with normal controls. Total 8 CA patients (mean age 51.1, male 4, female 4) and age-matched normal controls participated in this study. Participants were instructed to perform two balance tasks (non-dual and dual ML movement) with three different dual-task complexities. Range, variability, and velocity from the left, right and overall COMs were measured. Results demonstrated that CA patients showed deficits in balance and postural control with increased dual-task complexity during static balance task in Y axis and ML sway movements, and decreased COM sway movement during ML movement. However, there was no significant difference in static balance in X axis. With the higher difficulty in cognitive task, CA patients took longer to stabilize their COM and to regain balance, whereas normal controls showed no change between conditions. In addition, CA patients had a greater COM resultant velocity during recovery in the dual-task compared with the single-task condition. These findings suggest that CA patients had defendable compensatory strategies in dual tasking resulting in non, low level, high level and postural movement patterns. In conclusion, cerebellar ataxia patients(CA) managed the priority to balance and postural control. In situation with a postural threat, when potential consequences of the loss of stability increase, CA considered that postural control prioritizes over the performance of the secondary task.
