    Lately consumer's requirements for the product have shifted from performance (form follows function) to preference (form follows meaning). As a result, the trend focuses on affective quality improvement for the operation of automotive switch. But an existing approach has limits for the understanding of relationships between user affection and design variables because the affective response is very abstract and comprehensive. Therefore, it is necessary to hierarchically structure affective quality according to the affective response process. The objective of this study is to develop a structural model of affective quality for the operation of automotive switch based on human affection and material characteristics. First, using an exploratory factor analysis, this study developed a new measurement scale of affective quality according to the affective response process. Next, this study selected design variables that affect affective quality. As a result, three design variables were derived from nonlinear relations between the force and the stroke. Using the structural equation model, this study analyzed relationships between the human affection and design variables. Then, this study drew the importance of design variables that affect affective quality. Finally, we suggested a stepwise approach for affective product design according to the affective response process. It was expected that the results help properly estimate the human affection on the abstract response. Moreover, the results of this study could be used as a framework of systematic approach to modeling of the affective quality for the operation.
