Mixing characteristics of a two-phase anaerobic digester
A series of traditionally structured tracer studies, using lithium, were made on a laboratory-scale, two-phase anaerobic digester which was operated in the thermophilic range. The analyses of the results were based on the exit age distribution curves. These were used to calculate dispersion numbers and the point indices which are yardsticks of the amount of plug flow, short-circuiting and dead zones. Two studies were made: one with a granulated sludge; the other with a diffuse, non-granular biomass. The data were also compared with an earlier study of thermophilic upflow filters. The results showed that the mean particle size of the sludge did not affect the mixing behaviour and that the gas surface loading was linearly related to the degree of plug flow. It was also found that there was less mixing when the reactors were operating with the diffuse sludge.(Author abstract)
