AC impedance analysis and factorial designs of an in-situ phosphatizing coating
A full factorial experiment designed to obtain formulation factor effects of a single-step polyester melamine enamel/H 3 >PO 4 sub> system has been conducted. The designs consist of five factors (% H 3 >PO 4 sub>, VOC type, CLA/VEH ratio, DFT, and bake schedule) at two levels each. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to obtain quantitative performance of the formulated paint coatings on Q-panels. The results manifested that % H 3 >PO 4 sub> has the largest main effect, suggesting that H 3 >PO 4 sub> in the single-step paint system tends to diffuse to and react with the metal surface, providing a corrosion protective layer on the substrate. Under standard and 'real world' test environments, the in-situ phosphatizing paint performed with equivalent ranking to that of the multistep process.(Author abstract)
