Out of band signalling technique for passive optical networks
The telephony on passive optical network (TPON) concept has been explored by a number of research labs and telecommunication equipment manufacturerers as a cost effective means of deploying fiber optics in the subscriber loop. The most common technique for transmission from the subscriber (remote) terminals to the central office (CO) is time division multiple access (TDMA) in which each remote terminal (RT) transmits in one or more time slots assigned to it by the CO. A novel means of signalling between an out-of-service RT and the CO when connected via a passive optical network which contains other in-service RTs using a TDMA protocol is presented. A simple experiment using a non-coherent receiver is used to demonstrate the technique.(Author abstract)
