A Comparative Study about the Banquet Space of House between Korea and Japan in 13-14 Century
The interior design of Japanese style room(和室) of contemporary Japanese house is originated in the decoration of a social gathering space in upper class house of the Medieval Period(12-16C), when interchange between the court noble(公家) and the samurai class(武家) was demanded still more. At that time, in Goryeo dynasty(918-1392) of Korea, the literary meeting for amusement and social contact was prevalent in upper class house, and banquet space was made in house. Spacially in the 13-14C of Japan, it belongs to the late Goryeo, with the prevalence of literary meeting for social contact, the interior decoration of meeting space(會所) was appeared, and the building for exclusive use of meeting was begun to be made in samurai class house. It's very interesting that, in the similar time, the upper class people in both countries of Korea and Japan, they made the banquet space for amusement in their houses, and the houses were processed to the peculiar house form of both countries in premodern times. In this study, I did a comparative analysis about the banquet culture, and the meaning and form of architectural space in the upper class house between Korea and Japan in 13-14C, when in Goryeo making the building for exclusive use of meeting in house was prevalent.
