Wooden Buddhist Images of the Late Joseon Dynasty in Jecheon·Danyang Area, Chungcheongbuk-do
The Buddhist Images of the Joseon dynasty which are recently known to the public in the Chungbuk area are mainly from temples in the Jecheon and Danyang area. Among the Buddhist images in the Jecheon area, some have the Bokjanggi(腹藏記, the documents placed inside of the statue) and show the formative features of wooden Buddhist images in the Jecheon and Danyang area of the late Joseon through the common features in the style of Buddhist. From this, originating with the statue of Avalokiteshvara at Jeongbangsa temple (淨芳寺) in 1689, the Daneung(端應) style of Buddhist images had an influence on the images in this area, and the wooden seated Buddha Triads were carved at Silleuksa temple(神勒寺) in 1730, at Jogyesa temple(曹溪寺) in 1736 (the Buddha Image at Baengryeonsa temple(白蓮寺) and the Bodhisattva Image at Gangcheonsa temple(江天寺)), and at Cheongryeonam temple(靑蓮庵) in Danyang in around 1746. The long waist and the W-shaped wrinkle of clothes on the abdomen of Buddhist images' characterize the style. These styles of statues are related to the Buddhist images at the Yecheon and Sangju area and the Buddha Triad at Samhwasa temple(三和寺) in Samcheok. This shows the Buddhist cultural area were built up covering the Northern Gyeongsang area, the Eastern Chungbuk area centering around Jecheon, and the Southern Gangwon area over the late 17th through early 18th century. In particular, the wooden Buddha Triad at Geungnakjeon of Silleuksa temple, the wooden seated image of Buddha at Baeng-ryeonsa temple, and the wooden seated Bodhisattva image at Gangcheonsa temple turned out to be Buddhist images which were all carved by the chief Buddhist sculptor of Jeonghaeng(正幸) in the early 18th century: Jeonghaeng is a Buddhist monk whose name is unknown in the sculptor genealogy from the 18th century until now and is considered as a representative monk- sculptor active in the area of the North ChungCheong province at the time, judging from the grade and the remaining Buddhist images of Silleuksa temple.
