Intercultural Issues in the Global Workplace

    The present study aims to explore intercultural issues in the global workplace. The primary emphasis was given to identify issues pertinent to the three groups of people participated in the study. The groups were consisted of (a) Korean people working in oversea countries, (b) secretaries working in multinational companies in Korea, and (c) employees working in multinational companies in Korea. Participants were contacted through snowball sampling method and asked to participate in a series of focused interviews conducted on-line and off-line. The data collected were then coded by sentences and paragraphs to identify emerging themes. The intercoder reliability was assessed and the content analysis was further performed using the Ethnograph (v, 5.0), a qualitative research software. The most frequently mentioned issues by the group of people working in oversea countries were attribution/nationality, country specific information, business customs, gender roles, and cultural differences. On the other hand, the top five issues raised by the group of people working in multinational companies in Korea were English proficiency, cultural differences, verbalization, corporate culture, and business customs. Based on the result of the current study, it is suggested that an intercultural training needs to be developed according to the needs and work context of the target trainees since the relative importance of the issues might be different depending on different needs and backgrounds.
