An Investigation of Causality Between Travel Expenditure and Macro-Economic Variables
This paper tests the underlying causality between the travel expenditures and major macro-economic variables. The methods used for the analysis are Granger casuality test, regression model and co-integration test. Travel expenditures were revealed to be influenced by economic variables such as economic growth rate, import and foreign currency reservoir. On the other hand, variables influencing travel expenditures were identified as exports, saving deposits, and M2. From the economic point of view, departure tax could be an alternative to lessen the deficit of tourism balance of payment. If the travel tax does not work well as expected, author recommends that one should look for other solutions in consideration with appropriateness of amount of tax, correlation with tourism purpose and non economic variables.
