  • 초록

The purpose of the present paper is to survey and examine the meaning and technique of Politeness in communication. Grice proposed the Cooperative Principle composed of four maxims, which services as a guideline for language use on the basis of communicating information. The Politeness Principle, based on interpersonal relationships of the interlocutors, is as important as the Cooperative Principle because the Politeness Principle can make our relationships run more smoothly, which the Cooperative Principle cannot do. The Politeness is an important rule to guide the whole communication, not just local and unessential parts. To keep smooth relations in interpersonal communication, Politeness is much better and more important than rudeness. The Politeness Principle is composed of a tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, modesty maxim, agreement maxim and sympathy maxim. There are two meanings of Politeness; the conceptual meaning and the mental (psychological) meaning. The conceptual meaning of Politeness is general meaning and the mental (psychological) meaning is the internal and mental meaning of person. Anyway, the two meanings, conceptual meaning and mental(psychological) meaning are a very important in interpersonal communication. There is a technique to realize the Politeness. It is relaxed the direct factor when the speaker speaks. Thus, the hearer can feel comfortable from the speaker"s consideration. Both the speaker and hearer in living communication need Politeness. They have to think about Politeness all the time.
