A Study of the Effects of Using Multimedia on the Whole Language Approach
The purposes of this study are to investigate the effects of using multimedia in teaching English and to gain an in-depth understanding of how the whole language approach can be accomplished by means of the implementation of multimedia in English learning. The present study reviews a variety of learning theories such as programmed instruction, input as well as affective filter hypothesis, interaction theory, and constructivism that indicate how using multimedia can have impact on teaching and learning English. The study also deals with the benefits of the implementation of multimedia and some drawbacks of it in order to assist teachers, language researchers, multimedia material developers in understanding of the effects of using multimedia in teaching and learning English. It is concluded that the special attention should be given to the implementation of multimedia considering its potentials which might be able to compensate the limitations of the traditional ways of learning and teaching.
