Identical Case Marking and Scrambling in Korean
This paper explores constraints on scrambling in Korean, especially focusing on how scrambling possibilities are affected by identical case on arguments and adjuncts. Sells (1990) and Kuno (1980) account for this type of restriction based on the assumption of the existence of the VP constituent or of ambiguity processing constraint. However, they do not account for all the given data appropriately. This paper pursues a syntactic approach to the restriction, proposing the following: (ⅰ) a grammatically more prominent element linearly precedes a less prominent element when they bear the same case marking, and (ⅱ) the grammatical prominence is determined by the already well-known notions such as valence values (i.e., a subject is more prominent than a complement) and relative depth of embedding (i.e., a matrix element is more prominent than an embedded element). The validity of these proposals is examined through seven different constructions where identical case markings are realized on arguments and adjuncts.
