두 주인공들의 욕망의 한계 - 『시스터 캐리』의 캐리와 『아메리카의 비극』의 클라이드를 중심으로
A Study on the Limitations of Two Characters' Desire in Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy
In Sister Carrie, Carrie's life was instinctive rather than willful due to external forces in the course of obtaining material success and security. Carrie aimlessly pursued the illusion of wealth and pleasure, but she eventually experienced an unsatisfactory state of heart. The hopes and failures of American dream were expressed by the Clyde's hard life in An American Tragedy. Dreiser described Clyde as the weakest hero and victim of circumstances, chemism and magnetism. In conclusion, Dreiser pointed out that we, who living in the modern society, have suffered from the mental poverty through these two works. It is a pitiable thing that a man's life becomes more harsh and impersonal in an affluent society because of his infinite desires which never fulfill his quest for satisfaction. Pursuing of an excessive greed for wealth and pleasure eventually leads to an unsatisfactory state of heart and existence. Therefore, if a man accomplishes his desires and enjoyment based on morality and ethics, he can serve to his society and will be a genuinely happy person.
