Paradox and Hyperbole: The Study of the Figures of Speech in Antony and Cleopatra
This paper aims at analyzing the effect of paradox and hyperbole figures in order to investigate how the love of Antony and Cleopatra can be accepted as an eternal love transcending all rational and terrestrial dimensions. On the hypothesis that as much paradox predominates in describing Cleopatra as hyperbole is applied to Antony, it is shown that paradox plays an important role in persuading readers to believe in the poet's statements about their transcendental Love, by describing it as mysterious and by making Cleopatra mysteriously beautiful; while hyperbole is an effective means of suggesting Antony's human limitations, resulting from his pursuit of both the Roman empire and Cleopatra's love, as well as the image of the Antony in an imaginary world beyond reality. Shakespeare's magical technique which unified the theme of transcendental love organically with its figurative expression may well be regarded as a way of typifying the nature of his eternal art.
