An Intellectual's Critical Situation
This paper aims to investigate Saul Bellow's view on humanity in American modern culture through Ravelstein. Ravelstein is a main character modeled after the late Allan Bloom who was Bellow' colleague at the Committee on Social Thought in University of Chicago. The Committee was founded by Robert Maynard Hutchins, president of the University, for the study of the 'Great Books' which mean classical books from Socrates to Nietzsche. There, Bloom taught classical political philosophy and Bellow classical literature. Their partnership attracted the public's attention, when Bellow wrote the foreword for The Closing of the American Mind, a Bloom's Book. Ravelstein and Chick were fictionalized from Bloom and Bellow. Bellow insists that American culture is declining, especially reflecting his critical view on modern materialistic culture without love and his assertion for humanity through Ravelstein.
