『착오희극』(The Comedy of Errors)의 기독교적 해석
The Christian Approach to The Comedy of Errors
This paper tries to interpret Shakespeare"s The Comedy of Errors in view of Christianity. Even though this play is regarded as a low type of comedy because of its poor plot and unbelievable characterization, the happy ending and the magical reunion of families at the end are the foregrounds of Shakespeare"s last plays. Some Christian elements in this play can be described as a Christian paradoxical process. The framework of this play is about the dispersal and reunion of families which are similar to Jeremia"s words "He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a Shepherd." Emilia, Egeon and Antipholus of Syracuse experience the process of parting and meeting, which is the Christian paradoxical reversal of folly and wisdom, of loss and gain. At the end of this play Emilia resembles the Virgin Mary by meeting her husband and sons and servants, healing everyone by way of a gift of grace.
