『여인의 초상』에 나타난 신여성
New Women in The Portrait of a Lady
Women had to utterly depend on the marriage with wellborn men. New women had many different characteristics from regular women. They claimed their human rights as individuals, wanted to enter the public area where men already had occupied with power, institution, and tradition. Isabel Archer in The Portrait of a Lady, represented many aspects of new women. She has a strong desire for independent life and willingness for deciding her own fate. Henrietta Stackpole, who concerns more professional satisfactions than marriage, does writing articles as a reporter. Lydia Touchett, who refuses to play the traditional roles of women that has a sharpened sense of real life pursuing her own independent life. Madam Merle, refused traditional mother`s role for herself. It is quite clear that Henry James expressed his own thought through depicting women with higher mind.
