A Corpus-based Approach to Designing a Lesson Plan for Teaching Modal Verbs
It is a well-known fact that comparative studies on modal verbs are important to show the speaker/writer's attitude or mood in the English expression. This research aims at building up an effective lesson plan for teaching English modal verbs in a college English class. To this end, the students are encouraged to gain access to a great amount of real English input using corpora and concordance program and cope with difficulties in using an appropriate expression of modal verbs. The class focuses on comparing frequency and usage of modal verbs among the corpora - The British National Corpus, The Cambridge International Corpus, Harry Potter series, Korean high school English textbooks, pop music lyrics, President Bush's inauguration speech, and movie subscripts. Specifically, the research is interested in how the modal verbs of English textbooks are in accordance with the ones in the native speakers' corpora. In the process of analyzing modal verbs suggested by the lesson plan, the students are expected to make sense of them in real context.
