A Survey on the Utilization of the Native English Teachers in the Elementary School
This study surveyed the current state of the utilization of the native English teachers in Korea. The participants of the survey were 87 elementary school teachers who were team teaching English class with native speaker teachers. The results were the followings. First, most of the native speaker teachers were fixed to a school and were utilized in a regular English class, with 6th graders the most. Second, the native English teachers were effective in reducing fears of learners and teaching listening, speaking and pronunciation. However the native English teachers were not effective in teaching writing, reading and vocabulary which implies that more professional teaching skills were required by native English teachers. Third, team teaching in which Korean and native English teachers cooperate in planning and performing classes were popular. Native English teachers were effective in providing language input and communicative routines, while Korean teachers were good at maintaining discipline, explaining grammar. Finally some suggestions to improve the utilization of native English teacher were made.
