Poetic Language and Ideology in Sea Jeong-Ju"s Poetry

    The poetic language of Seo Jeong-Ju embodies a unique employment of linguistic mechanism and tradition, enough to be called the language of magic. The native, folklore, and traditional poetic expressions have even re-ceived admiration as the pinnacle of Korean poetry. However, there is definitely an issue in that the poetic language of Seo Jeong-Ju"s poetry did not originate from an intense awakening of the Korean reality but from a thoroughly strategic traditional method, that it was thoroughly submitted to fascist nationalism and ideologies under historical circumstances. In research of Seo Jeong-Ju"s poetry, it would not be a correct position to take to judge that his literature failed due to his political career or to point out that his actual political life was a failure despite the brilliance of his poetry. It must be noted that a poet"s poetry is definitely a matter of choice within his life, reality, and historical context, and that it is built therein. When a poet"s poetry is interpreted and analyzed within such context, the poet"s own poetic awareness is revealed. Considering the fact that a poet"s choice of language is thoroughly made within a historical context, the interpretation of poetic language also cannot be accurately understood if the context surrounding the poet is ignored. In Seo Jeong-Ju"s poetry, the symbol of transcendence discloses concern for artificial sublimity, transcendence, and fascist nationalism through traditional conventional languages(crane, sky, cloud etc.). As animism merges with mysticism, the ideology of metaphor, and the trap of oneness are employed. The poetics of easy transcendence and oneness is connected to the process borrowed from traditional subjects, as a poetic experiment, not realized within the subject"s intense conflict with reality(recently, I copied from the Shilla as an experiment, attracted somewhat by its spirit). The "Jongchun(from heaven)" ideology of accepting and understanding all things as "the will of heaven" is what brought about the lack of historical sense in Seo Jeong-Ju"s poetry. However, it may be said that the talented rhythm and aesthetic use of language found in Seo Jeong-Ju"s poetry represent his free artistic spirit, breaking away from ethical and Confucianist enlightenment. This may be deemed to be generated from the artistic spirit, rising beyond ethical order and reasonable education. Distinct from the Confucianist ethical view of the world, Seo Jeong-Ju"s craftsmanship wanted to enjoy the freedom of language by searching out people"s breath in line with a commoner"s philosophy. However, the blind artistic spirit in Seo Jeong-Ju"s poetry becomes a quality that constitutes a magical view of the world as well as the basis for non-historic awareness that pushed him to-ward extreme aestheticism. This may be understood as a natural and realistic awareness of the public leading toward the Jongchun ideology of following the will of heaven, completing the ideology of aesthetic conformity.
