신동엽의 시세계와 민족주의
Nationalism and the Poetry of Shin, Dong-yeop
Nationalism is the kernel of Shin, Dongyeop"s poetic world Considering the historical characteristics of Korea, such as the Japanese imperial domination and the consequent division of nation, it would be natural that most poets of the time tend to fall into nationalism However, the poet Shin"s case is rather exceptional in that his nationalism is especially one with the strong self-consciousness. With him, the task of being a poet seers to have been rendering the nationalism into more rich one with the equipment of poetry. Because his main poetic concern was the development of nationalism in poetry, his poems sometimes betray that they fail in respect of elaborating poetic dictions. But to him, it was more urgent to make out the spiritual lodestar to lead everyone to comprehend the troublesome period He was, that is to say, really a writer of grand narrative in this genre during the later 20th century in Korea As a poet of sharp sensibility and with great responsibility for the historical reality, who was living through the hard period of the Cold-war and national division, his major goal was to establish and articulate the ideal of complete national independence and unification of nation, and also to establish the perspective of history for the majority of people. His major works, such as 『Go away, Chaffs!』 and 『Keumkang』, are the important achievements which responded to the requirements of the age. If the center of literary discourse of Korea through 1970 to 1980 was the theory of national literature, the poet Shin"s works of 1960 should be respected as a Pith-breaking achievement, For the most important task of national literature of "70-"80 was how to frame out the ideal of complete national independence and unification and to establish the historical perspective for people. It is wide-known that the problem with nationalism in general is its exclusiveness of otherness. But the poet Shin"s poetic nationalism asks for objective and careful assessment, because his is quite different from many kinds of exclusive chauvinistic nationalism His nationalism is the creative out-come of national struggle against the unjust imperial oppression of foreign origin, and also of the people"s struggle against the dictatorial power system supported not only by the foreign power, but with various versions of ideology including Fascistic nationalism Shin"s poetry also tried to overcome this weakness of nationalism through searching for the ultimate truth. The major image of 「Keumkang」, "the sky" is one concerned to that truth. The powerful drive for the ultimate truth, which we net frequently in his poetry, however, often falls into the error of over-estimating the ideal world and over-estimating the old history of Han-nation, which as a whole leads to the diminution of the sense of reality of his poetic world Therefore the question of realism is one of the hotly discussed materials in relation with his poetry. Shin, Dongyeop dealt continuously with Donghak peasant war and the revolution of April as the rrost important historical events of relatively recent Korea. He formulates these historical events into the movements respectively for anti-imperial national independence and anti-dictatorial democracy, His peers also articulate these movements as ones for the restoration of the national pureness proper. These poetic achievement that realizes the people"s struggle against foreign power and Fascistic dictatorship is the accurate criticism of the distorted national reality. The poems, 「jongro 5th」, 「Why Do You Shoot?」 are good examples. In short, his nationalism of the people represented in his poetry is also the remarkable achievement of poetic realism. In conclusion, nationalism in Shin, Dongyeop"s poetry seem; to have played double-faceted role. It helped the poet to make out the leading spirit of the age, ..
