A Study on the Relations of Paek-Seuk's Life and His Literary Works
Paek-Seok was influenced by two women, Kyung-Ryun Park and Ja-Ya Kim. When he first met Kyung-Ryun Park in Jun 1935, he became so attached to her as to want to marry her. However he didn't make it, and after that, he got acquainted with Ja-Ya Kim in Ham-heung province and went out on a date with her. Since she was a 'kisaeng,' he made a blunder in marrying and left for Manchuria. He expressed a yearning toward these two women in his poems. The first poem of “Tong-young”(Dec., 1935) is not directly related to Kyung-Ryun Park, but his longing for her lies in the second “Tong-young”(Jan. the 1st, 1936). The third poem of “Tong-young”(Mar. the 6th, 1936) describes only the scenery and the custom of the south regions without any expression of his missing her. In addition, he put his concern about Ja-Ya Kim in his poems like “Bada(the sea),” “Natasha, White donkey and Me”. While he mentioned a yearning for Kyung-Ryun Park in a distance or like a snapshot, he showed the scene of a woman talking with him in these two poems. Therefore it is confirmed that they are connected to Ja-Ya Kim. There was a longing for Kyung-Ryun Park whom Paek-Seok had thought as a marriage partner for the first time in his inner world like heat haze. In other side, missing Ja-Ya Kim upon whom he relied when he was frustrated in failing marrying her lodged itself in his heart. If we consider that a poet's life is really reflected in his or her literary works, and important events in his or her life are presented there in some way, then the analysis of Paek-Seok's poems related to these two women means not merely to identify the facts themselves, but to provide us with a clue to examine and explain other works of his. That is, the poems of expressing longing for these ladies play a important part in his literary works in the sense that they can reveal the reason of his roaming around Manchuria. The reason why he wandered there remains still open, and the different proposals have been suggested: out of patriotism and protest against Japanese occupation, or just an escape from reality of a weak and introverted person, etc. It will be determined by the comparison between his poems related the two women and others.
