Laboratory study on the performance of hybrid macro soil fiber reinforced mixture

    Abstract The goal of this research is laboratory assessment of mixture reinforced with hybrid macro synthetic fiber. The hybrid synthetic fibers are composed of Polypropylene, Polyethylene with Aramid fibers which possess appropriate strength, endurance and cohesion features and even also as a stabilizer is used for soil reinforcement. These fibers have been utilized to improve asphalt concretes performance against rutting damages and fatigue cracks. Theses fibers have effective role in increasing the useful life of pavements due to repeated loading through controlling thermal, reflection and fatigue cracks also reducing rutting of the mixture. In this research the dynamic creep, wheel track rutting, resilient modulus and indirect tensile fatigue strength tests were performed and investigated for the asphalt concretes reinforced with hybrid macro synthetic fibers. According to the obtained results, hybrid macro synthetic soil fibers, improve performance of the asphalt concrete against damages due to the rutting (permanent deformations), fatigue cracks and thermal cracks and thus help in reducing the final thickness of pavement through increasing the mixture strength. Highlights The impact of fiber reinforced mixture in dynamic loading is much more than static. Increasing the resilient modulus in fibers reinforced mixture reduces cracking at low temperatures. A large increase in fatigue life and also reduce the permanent deformations has been observed. Due to the increasing of elasticity and ductility so fiber reinforced mixture can prevent the progression of cracks.
