Chemical vapor transport and solid-state exchange synthesis of new copper selenite bromides
Abstract A new dimorphic copper selenite bromide, Cu 5 (SeO 3 ) 4 Br 2 was obtained via chemical transport reactions. α -Cu 5 (SeO 3 ) 4 Br 2 , monoclinic ( 1m ) and β -Cu 5 (SeO 3 ) 4 Br 2 , triclinic ( 1a ) polymorphs were produced simultaneously upon reaction of amorphous, partially dehydrated copper selenite and copper bromide. 1m is similar to Cu 5 (SeO 3 ) 4 Cl 2 , whereas 1a is distantly related to Ni 5 (SeO 3 ) 4 Br 2 and Co 5 (SeO 3 ) 4 Br 2 . Attempts to reproduce synthesis of 1a via exchange reaction between Na 2 SeO 3 and CuBr 2 resulted in a new Na 2 [Cu 7 O 2 ](SeO 3 ) 4 Br 4 ( 2 ). Current study demonstrates for the first time, that both chemical vapor and exchange reactions can be employed in preparation of new selenite halides. Highlights Single crystals of dimorphic Cu 5 (SeO 3 ) 4 Br 2 were prepared by chemical vapor transport reactions. Both of compounds are the first copper selenite-bromides. Solid-state exchange reactions yielded a new compound Na 2 [Cu 7 O 2 ](SeO 3 ) 4 Br 4 . Structures of new compounds contain channels occupied by Br − ions and lone pairs on Se 4+ .
