Development of an Intelligent Material Shuttle to Digitize and Connect Production Areas with the Production Process Planning Department

    Abstract The article considers a white-goods producer and the material-flow between different production areas and suppliers in the supply chain. To increase the transparency of the production processes and the reactivity of the production process planning department, a variety of information must be gathered on the shop floor level. Therefore, preexisting manual material shuttles are equipped with cyber-physical systems (CPS) to enable the vision of horizontal and vertically networked value chain by requirement-based, iterative and evolutionary steps. Gathered information is send to the production process planning department and visualized in a lean manufacturing executive system (MES) with the aim of optimized process scheduling. The article consists of five sections: Analysis and derivations of requirements by using the 4 Level-Model, description of the use-case, development of a concept for digitize and connect production areas with the production process planning department, evolutionary development of several smart material shuttles and their integration in the MES.
