    The usual method to simulate vertical vibrations generated by road transport in laboratory is to use the average power spectral density. With this method, the distribution of the acceleration levels throughout the test is a Gaussian which does not conform to the reality of a transport. This study proposes an improvement of the classical method; this improvement permits to simulate the power spectral density and the distribution of acceleration levels by using a conventional device. The main idea of this method is to decompose the distribution of an actual road transport by using a sum of weighted Gaussians. Then, we apply the power spectral density with the root mean square acceleration (g rms ) level and duration corresponding to each Gaussian calculated from the weighted sum. We show that the weighting coefficients correspond to the time fraction of the test. Over the total duration of the test, we then retrieve the acceleration levels distribution of the actual transport. This new test method is experimentally validated with 2 examples of actual transports.

    The printing images on products and packaging play an important role in increasing the business value, adding artistic quality, and sending information. During transportation, scuffing of the printing images will emerge due to vibrations and impacts induced by rough roads and vehicles. This paper investigates experimentally the vibration scuffing through an ink transfer device. The scuffing value–time curves are obtained. Then the scuffing life curves G rms,e ‐N a,e based on excitation acceleration root‐mean‐square (RMS) and G rms,r ‐ N a,r based on relative acceleration RMS are developed. Both Basquin ‐type and exponential‐type curves may be applied to describe the scuffing life in this case. The excitation frequency width covering the resonance frequency has a significant effect on the scuffing life curve G rms,e ‐N a,e based on excitation acceleration RMS; however, it is not obvious on the scuffing life curve G rms,r ‐ N a,r based on relative acceleration RMS. The vibration system filters out the broadband excitation vibration frequencies away from the resonance zone and makes the relative acceleration signal a narrow one. The scuffing life curve in the resonance scuffing state is very different from that in the nonresonance scuffing state, and they should be distinguished in practical application. The scuffing life equations and curves obtained in this paper may provide a reference to the further research on packaging scuffing and its test evaluation and accelerated vibration test in laboratory.

    In practice, checks on dangerous goods transports often detect leaks of powdered dangerous goods from valved bags. In this work, the influence factors of a sudden release of powdery substances from the valves of valved bags were investigated. Drop tests were performed on paper bags of UN design type 5M2 with internal sleeve valve using 2 different powdery substances (Esplas H130 and zinc oxide “Rotsiegel”). The internal sleeve valves of all test samples were not sift‐proof with respect to both filling substances. For almost all test samples, the Esplas H130 powder already leaked out of pasted joints during manual filling. This is a contradiction to the requirement in UN 6.1.4.18.1, according to which closures and joints of paper bags 5M2 should be sift‐proof. In the drop tests, longer valve lengths had a greater sealing effect for both filling substances (for filling degrees of at least 95% and for test samples which had already been mechanically loaded). As an extreme example, at the drop height of 1.20 m and a filling degree of 100%, the released amount of zinc oxide powder from a 10‐cm‐long valve was about 16 times higher than from a valve length of 12.5 cm. The valve length is therefore a safety‐relevant parameter and should be specified by the manufacturer. To ensure that only filling goods with similar physical properties in comparison with the test substance are used for valved bags, the user must be informed of the particle size of the test substance.

    The biaxially oriented poly(lactic acid) films prepared using simultaneous biaxial stretching were perforated by CO 2 laser with the power of 60 W. The focal spot diameter was fixed at 103 μm. Pulse durations were varied from 1 to 30 μs, which corresponds to the fluence from 1.4 to 42.6 J/cm 2 . The perforated microhole size increased with increasing laser energy. The shape of microholes was circular for the films of equi‐biaxial stretching, whereas elliptical microholes were formed with its long and short axes corresponding to the directions of higher and lower stretch ratios, respectively. Comparing the laser perforation behavior of the as‐drawn films and annealed films, the opening of a microhole in the annealed films started at higher laser fluence, and at the same fluence the size of microhole was smaller. Gas transmission rates of the biaxially oriented poly(lactic acid) films with different thicknesses were examined. The oxygen transmission rates (OTR) of film improved with increased microhole diameter. The OTR of films containing 1 microhole/103 cm 2 (hole diameter of ~110 μm) was 184, 150, and 98 cm 3 /d in comparison with the OTR for the original films without microhole of only 16, 10, and 8 cm 3 /d, respectively. Packaging films with OTR higher than 100 cm 3 /d (equivalent to the 9700 cm 3 /m 2 /d) are required to create a modified atmosphere inside the package of fresh produce for shelf‐life extension. Measured OTR and CO 2 TR values of the 3 different shapes of microhole were compared and discussed.

    To allow for large‐scale forming applications, such as converting paperboard into package containers, efficient and reliable numerical tools are needed. In finite element simulations of thin structures, elements including structural features are required to reduce the computational cost. Solid‐shell elements based on reduced integration with hourglass stabilization is an attractive choice. One advantage of this choice is the natural inclusion of the thickness, not present in standard degenerated shells, which is especially important for many problems involving contact. Furthermore, no restrictions are imposed on the constitutive models since the solid‐shell element does not require the plane stress condition to be enforced. In this work, a recently proposed efficient solid‐shell element is implemented together with a state‐of‐the‐art continuum model for paperboard. This approach is validated by comparing the obtained numerical results with experimental results for paperboard as well as with those found by using 3D continuum elements. To show the potential of this approach, a large‐scale forming simulation of paperboard is used as a proof of concept.

    A rapid and reliable method for discriminating virgin and recycled expanded polystyrene (EPS) containers was developed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy combined with principal component analysis. Standard normal variate, first and second‐order derivative spectra were compared for the discrimination results. The results show that carbonyl region (1780‐1620 cm −1 ) spectra using first derivative transformation give the optimum classification results. In addition, the carbonyl compounds in EPS containers were detected to clarify the chemical difference between virgin and recycled containers, with a higher concentration of carbonyl compounds observed in recycled EPS containers. The combination of carbonyl region of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with chemometrics proved to be a promising method to discriminate virgin and recycled EPS containers, which could function as an additional tool for quality control of plastics.
