    Recent progress in the filed of transition-metal mediated C-H bond activation has had a great influence on organic synthesis. Among such transition-metal catalyzed reactions, ortho-functionalization via the chelationassisted strategy has been paid great attentions as one of the powerful methodologies for converting aromatic compounds into ones that are more functionalized at the exclusively ortho-position. In this context, various transition metal-catalyzed ortho-functionalizations such as alkylation, alkenylation, silylation and carbonylation are described briefly and their prospects are suggested.

    Copper(II) ion-selective PVC membrane electrode based on 2-mercaptobenzoxazole as a new ionophore and o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE) as plasticizer is proposed. This electrode revealed good selectivity for $Cu^{2+}$ over a wide variety of other metal ions. Effects of experimental parameters such as membrane composition, nature and amount of plasticizer, and concentration of internal solution on the potential response of $Cu^{2+}$ sensor were investigated. The electrode exhibits good response for $Cu^{2+}$ in a wide linear range of 5.0 ${\times}$ 10?.6-1.6 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ mol/L with a slope of 29.2 ${\pm}$ 2.0 mV/decade. The response time of the sensor is less than 10 s, and the detection limit is 2.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-6}$ mol/L. The electrode response was stable in pH range of 4-6. The lifetime of the electrode was about 2 months. The electrode revealed comparatively good selectivities with respect to many alkali, alkaline earth, and transition metal ions.

    Novel nickel catalyst deposited on nanoporous carbon was found to be an efficient catalyst for the epoxidation of simple alkenes with $O_2$ and isobutyraldehyde under mild conditions. Alkenes exhibited different reactivities towards Ni-catalyst and epoxidation with stilbene proceeds stereospecifically. This may be rationalized with the mechanism involving coordinated acylperoxy radical intermediate. Nickel contents depend on the preparative methods and the KNI-3 catalyst, which was synthesized by wet impregnation of $Ni(NO_3)_2$ into nanoporous carbon, shows the highest activity. The activity of the catalyst is well correlated with contents of nickel. Recycled catalysts suffer considerable loss of activity due to leaching of catalytic active species, nickel.

    A long, bis(monodentate), linking Schiff-base ligand L (py-CH=N- $C_6H_4$ -N=CH-py) was prepared from 1,4-phenylenediamine and 3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde by the Schiff-base condensation. Ligand L has two terminal pyridyl groups capable of coordinating to metals through their nitrogen atoms. In contrast, the same reaction between 1,2-phenylenediamine and 3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde produced a mixture of imidazol isomers (2-pyridin-3-yl-1H-benzoimidazole), which are connected to one another by the N-H…N hydrogen bonding to form a tetramer. From Zn( $NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and ligand L under various conditions, one discrete molecule, trans- [Zn( $H_2O)_4L_2]{\cdot}(NO_3)_2{\cdot}(MeOH)_2$ , and two 1-D zinc polymers, [Zn $(NO_3)(H_2O)_2(L)]{\cdot}(NO_3){\cdot}(H_2O)_2$ and [Zn(L) (OBC)( $H_2O$ )], were prepared. In ligand L, the N $\ldots$ N separation between the terminal pyridyl groups is 13.994 $\AA$ , with their nitrogen atoms at the meta positions (3,3') in a trans manner. The corresponding N $\ldots$ N separations in its compounds range from 13.853 to 14.754 $\AA$ .

    Indirect electrochemical oxidation of phenol by $Ce^{4+}$ was investigated in sulfuric acid solutions. It was found that electrode fouling during oxidation of phenol can be controlled by adjusting the time interval (TI) of double potential steps (DPSs). While the electroactivity was greatly decreased after several DPSs of a relatively long TI, repeated DPSs with a short potential pulse showed substantial amounts of electroactivity after a few hundreds or thousands DPS, suggesting that the formation of an insulating layer can be controlled by adjusting a potential program. Effectiveness of the consecutive application of DPSs for phenol decomposition was confirmed by GC-MS.

    The sharp-line absorption and emission spectra of $(H_{13}O_6)$ { $trans-[Cr(Me_2tn)_2Br_2]$ } $_2Br_2(ClO_4)\;(Me_2$ tn = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diaminopropane) have been measured between 13000 $cm^{-1}$ and 16000 $cm^{-1}$ at 5 K. The 298 K infrared and visible absorption spectra have also been measured. The nine electronic bands due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transitions were assigned. Using observed transitions, a ligand field analysis has been performed to probe the ligand field properties of coordinated atoms in the title chromium(III) complex ion. The zero-phonon line in the sharp-line absorption spectrum splits into two components by 286 $cm^{-1}$ , and the large $^2E_g$ splitting can be reproduced by the modern ligand field theory. It is confirmed that nitrogen atoms of the Me2tn ligand have a strong $\sigma$ -donor character, but the bromide has weak $\sigma$ - and $\pi$ -donor properties toward chromium(III) ion.

    초록

    Calculations are presented for the structures of various conformers of the bare proline and proline ?( $H_2O$ ) cluster. The effects of hydrogen bonding with a water molecule on the relative stability of the low energy conformers of proline are examined. Microsolvation by a water molecule is predicted to affect the relative stability, structures and the infrared frequencies of the conformers to a large degree.

    The three new lignans 1-3 were isolated from the methanol extracts of the flower buds of Magnolia fargesii. They were elucidated as (7S,8R)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-O-(2-methoxy-4-omegahydroxypropylphenyl) propane-1,3-diol, (7S,8S)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-O-(6-hydroxy-2-methoxy-4-omegahydroxypropylphenyl) propane-1,3-diol, and [tetrahydro-4-hydroxy-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)furan-3-yl]methyl 3,4-dimethoxy benzoate by spectral analysis.
