    Abstract Topology optimization can be used to design piezoelectric actuators by simultaneous design of host structure and polarization profile. Subsequent micro-scale fabrication leads us to overcome important manufacturing limitations: difficulties in placing a piezoelectric layer on both top and bottom of the host layer. Unsymmetrical layer placement makes the actuator bend, spoiling the predicted performance of the device. The aim of this work is to maximize the in-plane displacement of a microgripper-type actuator while out-of-plane displacement at some points of interest is suppressed. This last issue is the main novelty introduced in this work, and the emphasis is placed on the modelling and its applicability rather than numerical methods. In addition, a robust formulation of the problem has been used in order to ensure minimum length scale in the optimal designs, which it is crucial from the manufacturability point of view. Highlights Systematic procedure to design piezoelectric actuated microgrippers. Simultaneous optimization of the host structure and the polarization profile. Out-of-plane bending produced is suppressed in some points of interest. Control of the feature size through robust approach. Minimization of target to small manufacturing errors.

    Abstract In this paper, we present a modeling framework for hub location problems with a service time limit considering congestion at hubs. Service time is modeled taking the traveling time on the hub network as well as the handling time and the delay caused by congestion at hubs into account. We develop mixed-integer linear programming formulations for the single and multiple allocation versions of this problem. We further extend the multiple allocation model with a possibility of direct shipments. We test our models on the well-known AP data set and analyze the effects of congestion and service time on costs and hub network design. We introduce a measure for the value of modeling congestion and show that not considering the effects of congestion may result in increased costs as well as in building infeasible hub networks. Highlights A modeling framework for hub location problems with a service time limit considering congestion at hubs is presented. Mixed-integer linear programming formulations for the single and multiple allocation versions of this problem are developed. A measure for the value of modeling congestion is introduced. The models were tested on the well-known AP data set.

    Abstract This paper presents the mathematical modeling of the nonlinear vibration behavior of a hybrid laminated plate composed of carbon nanotube reinforced functionally graded (CNTR-FG) layers and conventional fiber reinforced composite (FRC) layers. Three type symmetric distributions of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) through the thickness of layers are considered. The cracks are modeled as aligned slit cracks across the ply thickness and transverse to the laminate plane. The distribution of cracks is assumed to be statistically homogeneous corresponding to an average crack density. The obtained partial differential equations are solved by the element-free kp-Ritz method, and the iteration process is dealt with using the linearized updated mode method. Detailed parametric studies are conducted investigate the effects of matrix crack density, CNTs distributions, CNT volume fraction, plate aspect ratio and plate length-to-thickness ratio, boundary conditions and number of layers on the frequency-amplitude responses of hybrid laminated plates containing CNTR-FG layers. Highlights A numerical framework for large amplitude vibration analysis of matrix cracked hybrid laminated plates. Matrix crack is considered based on self-consistent model. We show that the crack density of matrix cracks plays an important role in vibration of hybrid laminated plates. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate effects of various parameters on nonlinear vibration responses.

    Abstract This paper investigates the issue of reliability assessment for engineering structures involving mixture of stochastic and non-stochastic uncertain parameters through the Finite Element Method (FEM). Non-deterministic system inputs modelled by both imprecise random and interval fields have been incorporated, so the applicability of the structural reliability analysis scheme can be further promoted to satisfy the intricate demand of modern engineering application. The concept of robust structural reliability profile for systems involving hybrid uncertainties is discussed, and then a new computational scheme, namely the unified interval stochastic reliability sampling (UISRS) approach, is proposed for assessing the safety of engineering structures. The proposed method provides a robust semi-sampling scheme for assessing the safety of engineering structures involving multiple imprecise random fields with various distribution types and interval fields simultaneously. Various aspects of structural reliability analysis with multiple imprecise random and interval fields are explored, and some theoretically instructive remarks are also reported herein. Highlights Structural reliability analysis with multi-imprecise random and interval fields is freshly investigated. The concept of robust structural reliability is extended to systems involving hybrid spatially dependent uncertainties. The unified interval stochastic reliability sampling (UISRS) method is proposed. CDFs of the extreme bounds of the structural responses can be established. Distributions of system outputs may not be Gaussian if various distributions of inputs are presented simultaneously.

    Abstract In the second-order reliability method, the limit state function in arbitrarily distributed random variables is approximated by a quadratic polynomial of standard normal variables. The fitted quadratic polynomial is then used to calculate the probability of failure of the limit state. However, a closed-form solution for the probability of failure of a general quadratic polynomial surface is not available. As such, in this paper, a new second-order reliability method for reliability analysis is presented using saddlepoint approximation. The second-order approximation of the limit state function is obtained by the second-order Taylor series expansion at the most probable point. The cumulant generating function of the fitted quadratic polynomial of standard normal variables is derived analytically. The saddlepoint approximation is utilized to generate the probability density function, cumulative distribution function and probability of failure of the limit state. Finally, three numerical examples are used to compare the performance of the proposed second-order reliability with that of the first-order reliability method, the conventional second-order reliability method, and Monte Carlo simulation. The comparisons show that the proposed second-order reliability method gives accurate, convergent, and computationally efficient estimates of the probability of failure. Highlights A new study of the second-order reliability method (SORM) is presented. All the information from the fitted quadratic polynomial model of the limit state function is used. The cumulant generating function of the fitted quadratic polynomial surface in normalized standard variables is derived analytically. The saddlepoint approximation is utilized for reliability analysis. The proposed method is more accurate than the conventional SORM.

    Abstract The exponential distribution is commonly used to model electronics components and systems, mechanical fatigue failures, and some corrosion processes that usually do not wear out until long after the product's expected life span. Herein, based on a lifetime-performance index, we design acceptance-sampling plans for an exponential population with and without censoring using statistical and decision-theoretic methodologies that minimize the number of failures required during inspection. Moreover, the performance of established sampling plans is compared with that of the recently proposed approximation approach with full-ordered observed exponential data. We also investigate the industrial applicability of our recommended sampling plans in a case study. To encompass more real applications, the extension of the methodologies to the two-parameter Weibull distribution is also included. Highlights An exact form of the plan's operating characteristic function is derived. Plan parameters are obtained using an optimization model with nonlinear constraints. Tables are prepared for different mixes of quality and risk levels. The proposed plan's performance is examined and compared with the existing plan. The proposed plan's application is illustrated with examples.

    Abstract This work presents a highly accurate and efficient methodology for the computation of electromagnetic resonant frequencies and their associated modes in cavities. The proposed technique consists of a high–order discontinuous Galerkin time-domain solver combined with a signal processing algorithm for extracting the frequency content. The methodology is capable of incorporating the CAD boundary representation of the domain. The numerical results demonstrate that incorporating the exact boundary representation results in a improved convergence rate, a phenomenon that has not been previously reported. Several numerical examples in two and three dimensions show the potential of the proposed technique for cavities filled with non-dispersive or dispersive media. Highlights A high-order discontinuous time-domain method is presented for computing resonant frequencies and modes. The method incorporates the exact boundary representation of the computational domain given by a CAD model. The results demonstrates that the rate of convergence can be affected by an inaccurate geometric description. The method is able to provide a broad band of resonant frequencies for two and three dimensional cavities.

    Abstract The time dependency of ground deformation and stresses in tunneling is mainly due to the rock rheology and tunnel construction process. This study provides an efficient analytical approach to predict the time-dependent displacement and stress fields around deeply buried circular tunnels. The viscoelasticity of host rock, sequential installation of primary and secondary liners, various interface conditions and non-hydrostatic initial stress field are all taken into account in the analysis. The complex variable method, Laplace transformation technique, and extension of correspondence principle are employed in the analytical derivation. Time-dependent potentials expressed as Laurent series are addressed by satisfying all the governing equations in Cases –, where all possible conditions at rock–liner and liner–liner interfaces are considered. The time-dependent analytical displacement and stress fields of rock and liners are proposed for the entire tunneling process. As a validation step, the analytical solutions in Case agree well with the results of the FEM numerical simulations. Parametric analyses are then carried out to investigate the influences of installation time of the second liner in Case and , and an analytically-based method for design of the second liner is also presented. The proposed solutions in this paper provide a quick and simple alternative method for preliminary tunnel design, any viscoelastic models and any installation time of the first and the second liners can be considered. Highlights An analytical solution is proposed for lined circular tunnels in viscoelastic rock. All the possible interface conditions of rock-liner and liner-liner are considered. Any viscoelastic models and installation times of two liners can be considered. The influences of installation time of second liner are investigated. An analytically-based method for design of the second liner is provided.
