  3. [해외논문]   Unemployment and the specialization of criminal activity: A neighborhood analysis   SSCI

    Ha, O.K. , Andresen, M.A.
    Journal of criminal justice v.48 ,pp. 1 - 8 , 2017 , 0047-2352 ,

    초록

Purpose: Test the Cantor and Land (1985) model of unemployment on crime at the neighborhood level considering crime specialization. Methods: A panel of 87 census tracts in Vancouver, Canada for the years 1991, 1996, and 2001 is used in a decomposition model. We also control for a large number of routine activity and social disorganization theory variables. Results: Unemployment has an impact on crime specialization, but this impact varies in magnitude and by crime type. Strong support for the Cantor and Land (1985) model is found in the context of crime specialization. Conclusions: The Cantor and Land (1985) is robust to an alternative measure of criminal activity. The use of alternative measures provides insight into the subtleties of the relationship between unemployment and crime.

  4. [해외논문]   Procedurally just cooperation: Explaining support for due process reforms in policing   SSCI

    Pickett, J.T. , Ryon, S.B.
    Journal of criminal justice v.48 ,pp. 9 - 20 , 2017 , 0047-2352 ,

    초록

Purpose: We explore criminal justice workers' (CJW) support for due process reforms in policing. We build on and integrate four related literatures-scholarship analyzing 1) process-based regulation, 2) the generality of procedural justice, 3) the bilateral and dialogical nature of legitimacy, and 4) the tensions between the due process versus crime control models of criminal justice. We hypothesize that when citizens exercise procedural justice in their decisions about how to respond to legal authorities' inquiries and directives it enhances ''rights legitimacy'' and increases CJW's support for the due process model of criminal justice. Methods: We analyze data from a nationwide sample (N=579) of CJW. We examine whether CJW's perceptions that citizens are fair and respectful toward police are associated with their support for due process reforms. Results: Procedurally just cooperation predicts support for due process reforms among police officers and other CJW, both before and after a highly publicized negative police-citizen encounter (the police killing of Michael Brown), and regardless of respondents' race, gender or career length. Conclusions: The findings support the generality of the process-based model and the bilateral and dialogical nature of legitimacy.

  5. [해외논문]   Does the strength of the victim-offender overlap depend on the relationship between the victim and perpetrator?   SSCI

    Zimmerman, G.M. , Farrell, C. , Posick, C.
    Journal of criminal justice v.48 ,pp. 21 - 29 , 2017 , 0047-2352 ,

Purpose: Strong evidence of the correlation between victimization and offending has led researchers to investigate both the causal relationship between victimization and offending and possible contingencies in this relationship. But, research has yet to investigate whether the victim's relation to the perpetrator impacts the strength of the victim-offender overlap. Drawing on betrayal trauma theory, we examine whether the victim-offender overlap depends on the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator. Methods: Using data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, a three-level logistic item response model nested 7936 violent crime item responses at level 1 within 992 subjects (at level 2) representing 174 neighborhoods across metropolitan Chicago (at level 3). Results: Victimization by a relatively unfamiliar (acquaintance) or unknown (stranger) perpetrator did not increase the likelihood of subsequent violent behavior, while victimization by a family member, peer, or gang member was significantly associated with future violence. Among known perpetrators, victimization by a family member was least likely to generate an offending response. Conclusions: Victimization and offending are inextricably linked, but the ways in which these constructs are related are nuanced. In particular, the strength of the victim-offender overlap depends on the relationship between the victim and perpetrator.

  6. [해외논문]   Impulsivity as an etiological factor in sexual homicide   SSCI

    Healey, J. , Beauregard, E.
    Journal of criminal justice v.48 ,pp. 30 - 36 , 2017 , 0047-2352 ,

    초록

Purpose: The goal of this study is twofold: the continued isolation of theoretically relevant factors associated with sexual homicide and to continue bringing the academic study of sexual homicide into the realm of mainstream criminology by applying the well-known criminological concepts such as impulsivity. Methods: The sample is comprised of nonhomicidal sex offenders (NHSOs) who inflicted severe physical injuries (n=146) and sexual homicide offenders (SHOs) who killed their victim (n=83). Logistic regression analyses were constructed to investigate the impact of impulsivity on sexual homicide. Results: While controlling for theoretically relevant factors, impulsivity is an important concept to sexual homicide. Specially, the findings of this study suggest that sexual murderers present personal characteristics that differ from nonsexual homicide offenders. Conclusions: Sexual murderers present personal characteristics different from nonhomicidal sex offenders - even the violent ones - and it is important to continue investigating this line of inquiry. Although some sex offenders may be largely influenced by situational factors and end up killing the victim, the results show that personality traits such as impulsivity may also explain why some sex offenders kill their victims.

  8. [해외논문]   It's time: A meta-analysis on the self-control-deviance link   SSCI

    Vazsonyi, A.T. , Mikuska, J. , Kelley, E.L.
    Journal of criminal justice v.48 ,pp. 48 - 63 , 2017 , 0047-2352 ,

Purpose: The current meta-analysis examines the link between self-control and measures of crime and deviance, taking stock of the empirical status of self-control theory and focusing on work published between 2000 and 2010. Methods: A total of 796 studies were reviewed for inclusion/exclusion criteria and yielded a final study sample of 99 studies (88 cross-sectional and 19 longitudinal effect sizes, analyzed separately). Random effects mean correlations between self-control and deviance were analyzed for cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, respectively. Publication bias was assessed using multiple methods. Results: A random effects mean correlation between self-control and deviance was M r = 0.415 for cross-sectional studies and M r = 0.345 for longitudinal ones; this effect did not significantly differ by study design. Studies with more male participants, studies based on older or US-based populations, and self-report studies found weaker effects. Conclusions: Substantial empirical support was found for the main argument of self-control theory and on the transdisciplinary link between self-control and measures of crime and deviance. In contrast to Pratt and Cullen, but consistent with theory, the effect from cross-sectional versus longitudinal studies did not significantly differ. There was no evidence of publication bias.
