  3. [해외논문]   Imitation, interdiscursive hubs, and chronotopic configuration   SSCI

    초록

Abstract Taking inspiration from work on imitation, chronotope, and scale, this paper examines the formation of chronotopes of bureaucratic personhood in Indonesia during a period of rapid change. My data is drawn from a database of over a thousand stories from an online Indonesian newspaper that were published between 2003 and 2004. In looking at a small subset of this database, I show how imitation of particular characteristics and the use of features that act like selective deictics help to produce and circulate the chronotope of the deviant bureaucrat. I propose that the co-occurrence of imitation and the erasure of deictic anchoring produces interdiscursive hubs that are crucial for chronotopic configuration. Highlights Synthesizes contemporary work in semiotics to proposes a model for the study of chronotopic formation. Identifies a new process, interdiscursive hub, that seems important in the formation of chronotopes. Proposes a new concept, interdiscursive hub, to capture this process.

  4. [해외논문]   Roads to regimentation: Place, authenticity and the metapragmatics of naming   SSCI

    Karlander, David
    Language & communication v.53 ,pp. 11 - 24 , 2017 , 0271-5309 ,

    초록

Abstract Social agents often stake claims to the naming operations that are embedded in official discourse. The present article explores the metapragmatics of such investments. Drawing on post-Austinian theories of naming (Kripke, Harris, Bourdieu, Silverstein), the article analyses the contentious process of naming roads in a rural community in Sweden. In this process, one major stake was the entextualisation of names in Ovdalsk, a locally used form of Scandinavian. Focusing on an extended exchange over spatial and linguistic authenticity, the article elucidates several ways in which the semiotics of place are bound up with a range of symbolic struggles and antagonisms. More generally, the article argues that such focus is necessary for grasping the semiotisation of space and spatialisation of semiosis. Highlights Metapragmatic exchange shapes indexical relationships between language and place. Spatialised semiosis precipitate from metapragmatic exchange. Metapragmatic exchange is a good inroad to grasping the semiotisation of space and spatialisation of semiosis. These points are illustrated through an analysis of a struggle over road naming in Alvdalen, Sweden.

    초록

Abstract Research on language attitudes has shown that speech style plays an important role in social evaluation. In Croatia, English words commonly occur in everyday communication, which could affect the way we perceive other people. This study aims to investigate the relation between English words and person perception. 200 Croatian elementary school students, adolescents and young adults were given one of the three versions of the same text, varying in the frequency of English words, and a questionnaire to evaluate personal characteristics of the author of the text. The results showed that frequent use of English words was related to higher estimations of social attractiveness, indicating that the use of English words has become an important cue in person perception. Highlights In Croatia, as in many other languages, English words have become common in informal communication. More frequent use of English words is related with higher estimations in the social attractiveness category. The use of English words has become an important cue in person perception.

Abstract Lexical categories of CDS were examined among 40 Hebrew-speaking parents of infants in early pre-verbal, late-preverbal, single-word and early grammar stages during spontaneous parent–infant interactions. Two hundred utterances from each sample were transcribed, coded for types and tokens, and analyzed. Findings demonstrated a significant growth in types of content words from early to late pre-verbal stages, significant decline at the single-word stage, and an increase at the early grammar stage. Apparently, parents change their use of content words to accommodate their child's linguistic development, attesting to dynamic/reciprocal parent–child interactions. Additionally, findings support that verb use is similar to or higher than noun use by parents at all developmental stages. Highlights In Hebrew CDS, verb use is similar to or higher than noun use by parents at all developmental stages. Analysis reveals changes in the use of content words in parents CDS depending on the child's linguistic stage. Parents change their use of content words to accommodate their child's linguistic development. The findings strengthen the claim of reciprocal relations in parent–child dyads.

  7. [해외논문]   Resignifying the Japanese father: Mediatization, commodification, and dialect   SSCI

SturtzSreetharan, Cindi (Current address: School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University, P.O. Box 872402, Tempe, AZ 85287-2402, United States.)
    Language & communication v.53 ,pp. 45 - 58 , 2017 , 0271-5309 ,

    초록

Abstract A new style of Japanese masculinity targeting the new middle class, specifically stereotypical salarymen, is highlighted in the 2013 Cannes Jury Prize Award winning movie, Soshite Chichi ni Naru ( Like Father, Like Son ). Belabored by the ongoing economic slump and ever-decreasing birthrates, masculinity is (re)presented both visually and audibly as a hands-on caregiving father who speaks a regional dialect. Through mediatization and language commodification, Osaka dialect is resignified and linked to an affective, hands-on fatherhood. The juxtapositioning of Standard language and dialect serves to underscore a distinction between a cold, distant father and a warm, affective one. The film provides valuable insight into the emergence of a new ideal of fatherhood that is indexed through language. Highlights New style of connected fatherhood is demonstrated. Language commodification of a regional dialect is reported. Regional dialect and stereotypically masculine language is used by a connected and caring father. Social class and connected fatherhood are inversely related. New indices of warm affect and connected fatherhood are attached to dialect.

  8. [해외논문]   Translator's positioning and cultural transfer with reference to The Book and the Sword   SSCI

    Luo, Yongzhou
    Language & communication v.53 ,pp. 59 - 68 , 2017 , 0271-5309 ,

    초록

Abstract Drawing on positioning theory, this study investigates how the translator, based on a certain sociocultural positioning, has reconstructed aspects of Chinese martial arts culture in the English translation of Jin Yong, with reference to The Book and the Sword . In so doing, this study foregrounds the hold of positioning over linguistic and cultural production, and particularly how the translator, as opposed to a priori and fixed modes of positioning, can perform dynamic alternative positions even on the same issue, thus practicing an ethics of balance in translation. It also calls into attention the role of translation in intercultural communication, and particularly how martial arts translation contributes to the reconstruction of Chinese national and cultural identity in the context of globalization. Highlights Translator's positioning has a hold over linguistic and cultural production. Translation has a role to play in promoting Chinese national culture. Martial arts translation contributes to the reconstruction of Chinese identity.

  9. [해외논문]   Persuasive language in the subgenre of Persian sales e-mails   SSCI

Ahangar, Abbas Ali (Corresponding author. English Language and Literature Department, Faculty of Literature and Humanities, University of Sistan and Bauchestan, Univeristy Street, Postal Code: 98135-655, Zahedan, Iran.) , Zeynali Dastuyi, Seddigheh
    Language & communication v.53 ,pp. 69 - 86 , 2017 , 0271-5309 ,

    초록

Abstract This paper aims at classifying and discussing persuasive messages in Persian sales e-mails, based on a move scheme proposed by Cheung comprising 10 major moves and 36 steps. Results of the research showed “introducing the offer” is the most frequent move employed in Persian sales e-mails under study. Besides, new steps “presenting frequently asked questions” and “motto” were found in the data which may be added in the move scheme provided by Cheung, if it is going to be considered cross-linguistically and cross-culturally. In addition, some moves or steps were applied in a twofold manner. Furthermore, the results indicated that culture can be regarded as a factor in choosing the strategies used by the Iranian makers' advertisements. Highlights “Introducing the offer” is the most frequent move used by the Iranian makers. Some new steps may be added in the Cheung's model like “motto”. Some strategies like “Triggering the action” were used directly and indirectly. “Culture” is an effective factor in choosing the strategies used by the makers.
