    This paper presents a modeling and experimental study using a multi-frequency electromagnetic (EM) sensor system, for non-destructive evaluation of rail decarburisation. The EM sensor is configured with a H-shaped ferrite core, which was excited with a multi-frequency waveform over the range of approximately 1-100kHz. Finite-element (FE) simulation was carried out to establish the link between the EM sensor output and the level of decarburization. Rail samples with different levels of decarburisation, due to different bloom reheat times prior to rolling were tested in the laboratory. It was found that the zero-crossing frequency of the EM sensor response is linearly proportional to the decarburisation level by FE simulation, theoretic analysis and experiment. This finding is helpful in understanding the response of the EM sensor to rail decarburisation and could lead to a non-contact, non destructive method for use during rail manufacturing. In addition, on-site measurement (tests carried out in the Rail & Section Mill at Tata Steel) was taken on a 110m long rail product, with the results indicating that the EM sensor response correctly follows the expected decarburisation profile along the rail length.

    This paper presents a method for the automatic detection and classification of defects in radiographic images of welded joints obtained by exposure technique of double wall double image (DWDI). The proposed method locates the weld bead on the DWDI radiographic images, segments discontinuities (potential defects) in the detected weld bead and extracts features of these discontinuities. These features are used in a feed-forward multilayer perceptron (MLP) with backpropagation learning algorithm to classify descontinuities in ''defect and no-defect''. The classifier reached an accuracy of 88.6% and a F-score of 87.5% for the test data. A comparison of the results with the earlier studies using SWSI and DWSI radiographic images indicates that the proposed method is promising. This work contributes towards the improvement of the automatic detection of welding defects in DWDI radiographic image which results can be used by weld inspectors as a support in the preparation of technical reports.

    In the world of rail travel, unplanned track maintenance constitutes disruption and negatively impacts customer satisfaction. To maintain railway networks it is necessary to plan maintenance before it becomes critical, preferably by at least a year. A major concern in railway quality is the occurrence of micro-cracks in railhead surfaces, due to rolling contact fatigue. When these cracks are superficial, no more than about a millimeter in depth, the railhead lifetime can be increased by grinding or polishing. However, the deeper the cracks are, the sooner they will grow beyond a depth that can be managed by polishing. Current inspection techniques are able to detect millimeter sized cracks, but no smaller. We present a new technique for the detection of cracks in railheads, which is able to detect cracks of 20-100@?m depth optically, by way of broadband, spatially incoherent optical coherence tomography. Detection of micro-cracks at an earlier stage of development and the study of their progression will aid in advance planning and scheduling of maintenance.

    The use of guided waves is now widespread in industrial NDT for locating metal loss in pipelines, that manifests as pitting, corrosion and general wall thinning. In this paper, a screening technique is assessed in terms of defect detection and defect sizing capability. Shear Horizontal (SH) guided waves propagate circumferentially around the pipe whilst the scanner is moved axially along the length. This type of tool is preferable to other methods, being applied to the exterior of the pipe, without requiring full circumferential access, and is able to operate through thin coatings (up to 1mm thick). It is designed to provide a pipe screening tool for petrochemical pipelines both topside and subsea, particularly for detecting defects at pipe support areas. The system's efficacy in terms of detection and sizing of defects is considered via experimental measurements on artificially induced defects and in service corrosion patches, with results compared to finite element modelling of the interaction of the guided waves with artificial defects. Finite element modelling has been used to better understand the behaviour of different wave modes when they interact with defects, focusing on the mode conversions and reflections that occur.

    Application of X-ray computed tomography (CT) for pore-related characterization and simulation of cement mortar was explored in this paper. Based on visualization and quantitation of the three-dimensional (3D) morphological features (i.e., appearance, size, volume, shape, and distribution) of pores, the porosity, tortuosity-connectivity, permeability, and molecular diffusion of cement mortar were computed and simulated. The simulation of the permeability and molecular diffusion of cement mortar was carried out on the basis of Darcy's law and Fick's second law, respectively. The dynamical velocity field and concentration field were respectively visualized. It was found that the X-ray CT technique provided a promising non-destructive alternative for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the pore-related characterizations of cementitious materials. Furthermore, it was possible to use the simulations to replace lab-intensive experimental tests to quickly obtain the permeability and diffusivity parameters of cement mortar for application in engineering design.

    The main disadvantage of electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) is their inefficiency in generating ultrasound. A new design of Rayleigh-wave EMAT is proposed with improved ultrasonic generation efficiency on non-ferromagnetic materials. The new EMAT's magnet is narrower than the meander-line coil used in the transducer and the coil itself has an uneven distribution of conductors. The principle of the new design is informed by finite element simulations, which show that the EMAT generates Rayleigh waves more efficiently by taking advantage of both horizontal and vertical magnetic fields of the magnet simultaneously. Experimental measurements verify that the maximum amplitude of the ultrasonic signal generated by the new design of EMAT working under a pulse-echo configuration has been enhanced by 90%, when compared to conventional designs.

    This paper introduces measurements using eddy currents and the estimation of hidden crack dimensions. The measurements were made on the defect-free side of the aluminium plate. The dimensions of the excitation coil were investigated with the aim of optimizing the sensitivity of the measurements. Measured values were smoothed properly in order to ease further processing. Furthermore, the estimation of the crack dimensions was made using pre-calculated values obtained with a Finite Element Model. Measurements and tests were made for three different test plates with straight cracks and for one test plate with a crack that was not straight.

    We propose the multi-directional adjacent wave subtraction (MAWS), shifted time point (STP) mapping and variable time window amplitude (VTWA) mapping algorithms for crack visualization based on our finding that the processing direction of the adjacent wave subtraction with respect to crack orientation can dramatically affect crack visibility. The proposed MAWS, STP and VTWA mapping algorithms were implemented in a laser ultrasonic propagation imaging system and were applied in a nondestructive evaluation of an Al-alloy tank liner for space applications. A crack and void on the fusion zone of a weld were more effectively visualized using the proposed algorithms, and the crack could be visualized regardless of its orientation. The multi-directional processing results of the anomalous wave propagation imaging were visualized as video clips. The STP mapping algorithm, which maps the number of shifted time points to minimize the difference between adjacent waves, was developed to enhance the crack visualization capability of the system. Additionally, the multi-directional VTWA mapping algorithm performed data projection using the residuals of MAWS processing and provided stationary mapping results of crack-induced anomalous waves. The presented results demonstrate that the proposed visualization algorithms are promising techniques that do not overlook unknown crack orientations.

    Short glass and carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites are used in many industrial fields such as in automotive and consumers industry. Their physical and mechanical properties are often superior to those of unfilled polymer components. One aspect being of utmost importance for these properties is the fiber orientation distribution. Here, we present X-ray vector radiography as a method to characterize fiber orientation in short fiber reinforced polymer components. The method is based on X-ray grating interferometry and takes advantage of X-ray scattering caused by the sample's microstructure. Therefore, micro-structural properties can be probed nondestructively without the need for high spatial resolution. Compared to standard X-ray imaging techniques, currently applied for fiber orientation studies, the presented method does not restrict the size of the sample under investigation and allows for much shorter measurement times. In contrast to existing methods, X-ray vector radiography allows the characterization of carbon fiber reinforced polymers despite the weak attenuation contrast between the fibers and the polymer matrix. As this method is also extendable into three dimensions it is a very attractive tool for complex component geometries and carries potential to be applied to materials other than short fiber reinforced polymers.
