    Since genetic resources resistant to anthracnose are found only in Capsicum baccatum germplasm in Korea, interspecific hybridization is the only way to transfer the resistance into C. annuum varieties. Interspecific incompatibilities, such as embryo abortion and hybrid sterility, were determined as the two genetic barriers in crosses between C. annuum and C. baccatum. Embryo rescue techniques were successfully employed to overcome embryo abortion and interspecific hybrids could be raised from a few otherwise incompatible crosses. However, postfertilization embryo abortion occurring before the globular stage is a limiting factor to produce interspecific hybrids in the cross of C. annuum and C. baccatum. To overcome this genetic barrier, trispecies bridge crosses using C. chinense as the bridge parent were carried out and a number of three-way hybrids were raised from completely incompatible crosses without embryo rescue techniques. In addition, pollen sterility was not complete in these threeway hybrids. Therefore, the three-way F2 generation as a segregating population could be made and introgression of anthracnose resistance of C. baccatum var. PBC80 was confirmed in the population by an artificial inoculation test.

    The effects of high CO₂ controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions on the quality of ginseng roots were investigated. High CO₂ atmosphere (10% O₂ + 90% CO₂) inhibited the incidence of decay development in ginseng roots. The ginseng roots were infected only 10% in high CO₂ storage after 5 months, whereas all of the roots were infected in air storage. The incidence of internal cavity in fresh and processed ginseng roots by high CO₂ atmosphere. The internal cavity of steamed ginseng processed from the air stored ginseng roots was a serious problem in ginseng industry. The internal cavity of the roots gradually increased during storage. However, high CO₂ CA storage remarkably reduced the occurrence of internal cavity in steamed ginseng roots.

    'Superior' potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the most predominant cultivar for ware production occupying more than 60% in Korea. The basic seed tubers are produced by meristem-tip culture followed by hydroponics. To investigate the growth patterns of this cultivar including tuber number, size, and quality under hydroponics, potato tubers were sampled at 60, 70, 80, and 90 days after transplanting (DAT), and were sorted by fresh weight into six classes of tuber size: 1−5, 5−10, 10−20, 20−30, 30−50, and ≥ 50 g. Compared with the conventional harvesting date (90 DAT), the earlier harvests at 70 or 80 DAT increased the number of tubers in the range of 5−30 g. The total number of tubers produced per plant remained similar. However, total tuber weight per plant significantly decreased in earlier harvests. Specific gravity increased with the tuber size up to 10 g, but the difference between 10 and 50 g tubers was not significant. The specific gravity increased over time to 90 DAT. Shoot growth was maximum at the early harvesting date (60 or 70 DAT) and declined thereafter. Except for tubers from 60 DAT, the dormant period of early harvest tubers was not different with that of late harvest tubers of 90 DAT. These results clearly represented an economic advantage of early harvesting of 70 or 80 DAT because of cost reduction in hydroponics.

    Double-transformed lettuce plants were obtained from single-transformed lettuce plants with FHV vector (pILTAB 357 containing full length of human H-chain ferritin and nptII genes). Leaf disks from the singletransformed lettuce were transformed serially with FLV vector (pCAMBIA 1302 containing full length of human L-chain ferritin and hpt genes) and selected onto medium containing 50 ㎎ㆍL⁻¹ kanamycin, 5 ㎎ㆍL⁻¹ hygromycin, and 200 ㎎ㆍL⁻¹ cefotaxim. Green shoots were rooted in root-induction medium and regenerated plants were grown in a greenhouse. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis revealed the presence of the expected 600 and 530 bp products for human H-chain and L-chain ferritin genes, respectively. Reverse transcription-PCR analysis showed that the two types of ferritin genes could be expressed in the double-transformed plants. Most double-transformed lettuce plants except HL10 and HL12 had higher plant height differences than non-transformed plants. HL2, HL8, and HL9 were two times higher Fe concentration than the non-transformed plants, but HL5 and HL23 showed half of Fe concentration than the non-transformed plants. In this study, the two types of human ferritin genes did not have cooperative roles in Fe uptake mechanism in lettuce plants.
